I use a dry film lube on my saw bearings, goes on wet and dries it becomes a film, it is lube but wont attract dirt. Grease the base the of the air filter toi kewep micro dust from being sucked in. A 14 inch non safety bar and chain seems about perfect of these little saws. The metal dawg proctects the frint of the oil tank.

Agree on the plastic dogs. Very cool that they at least made an option to put them on!

I believe many people don’t know about that bearing! Good job. Some bearings are available metal caged and some plastic

I like the ms170. I think it is a good performing saw for the money and weight. They get a lot of criticism but I suspect it may very well be from the same people that don’t recognize the purpose and value in a battery powered tool as well. I find that many tools excel in one area but not another. Not every saw needs be 70cc or 90cc. 😂

Thanks for sharing this! I don't know why they had to put the chain tensioner on the front of these saws, its such an awkward pain in the ass to adjust.

I have a MS180 and i did the SIMPLE Big tooth conversion by changing out the bar and chain to the Next size up without WITHOUT any modifications. This give you a MUCH better cutting saw. And the chain is MUCH more beefy and to me Easier to sharpen. The saw REALLY comes to life and cuts well AFTER this modification. STIHL OE parts even say it FITS so before you say it NOT intended to use that size you are WRONG. On the package for the BAR and Chain it CLEARLY says Fits MS180. Why would Stihl put that it fits on the package if you cant use it. The Pico chain shit is garbage... And it belongs there.

now we have 027-8 so I pull out stihl saw. Took home & started it. It was 170. It needed chain & sprocket $30.
Boy that is a fast running nice little saw. I did sub.

I got a 14" bar and bigger chain for my MS180, sooo much better, and bolts straight on, no sprocket change. Ive done your suggested mods already, they make the saw much nicer to use. Mine runs very rich, so the spark arrestor will be the next thing to go. Great vid!

I'd consider the use of grease inadvisable in such a dirty application as a chain saw. It will tend to capture and retain all manner of grit and abrasives. And certainly there's enough oil flying around anyway, so that no additional lubrication is even needed.
Maybe that's recommended by Stihl, but seems inadvisable to me.

First thing you need to up grade are your tools. Not very convincing you know what your doing if you have to use an Allen wrench style torx.

l have already purchased 2 ms 180s for $299au with carry case and spare chain. Beware one struggling dealer refused to provide carry case as "his margins were to thin. Second and subsequent purchases made with a much better Stihl dealer. I have completed these upgrades for $22 au. l am planning to go to the 18inch bar (rare) on the second chainsaw.
4 years later and l haven't worn out the first one yet after 8 new chains and one new bar. Brilliant machine has completed over 500 hours work. Not quiet the disposable cheap purchase l was expecting.

For the cost of your "upgrades" you should've just bought an MS180 or MS210. You'd have been much further ahead for the same cost, and NO bother.

I unscrewed the adjuster all the way, and that made levering the assembly out easy.
After market kit is cheaper than genuine but they don't look to be equal quality.
Stick to genuine parts if you can.
Stihl part # 1123-007-1000 (includes a screw and small end cover).
Non genuine don't normally include these bits, so be aware.
Attaching the dogs does also make a difference - genuine or not they all seem to work.

I am really considering buying this saw. I have a very old 020AV made is West Germany. Its a great old saw for around the house, but it does not have a chain break, and it worries me to use it in the event of a kickback. The add on's you did was some of the reasons I have been on the fence about this saw. I know it is a entry level saw, but for a home owner like myself that just uses is for yard maintenance, and cutting camp fire wood, i think its a great bargain.
