Great informative video Phil. Just a quick question. Once the T3 line closes between Sydenham and Bankstown will Bankstown remain open for T6 immediately or will it not be open till The 12 month closure?

So, from what I know after talking to one of my fellow Union Delegates that has been involved in the transition to Metro working, platform 1 will be the only platform used by Sydney Trains services and for the first 12 months of the closure of the Bankstown line, platform 1 will have a buffer stop approximately half way down that will only allow for the 4 car Lidcombe - Bankstown shuttle services while work continues on the Sydney end of the platforms to accommodate the Metro. After that, 8 car services will resume. Access to the Metro Platforms will be via same level walkways/platforms rather than an overhead concourse. Also, for some reason, unlike Chatswood or Epping, passengers may be required to tap off from the Sydney Trains area and tap onto the Metro for some weird reason.

Hi Phil. There will in fact be "any kind of new concourse" right where you're standing.
The area at the ends of the existing passageway will become the new main entrance and pedestrian crossing of the railway lines.

Since the Crossover will be Built east of Bankstown for Metro. But the Problem is that we don't want the Train to Collide with the Metro. Where will the Crossover be to terminate Sydney Trains at Bankstown?

The lidcome via regents Park and the city circle via sydenham

the new platforms are straight, but the train tracks at the moment isn't. Would they get some minor realignment for the metro platforms?

I love the metro and support the conversion to free up capacity for heavy rail lines, but it's ridiculous they didn't terminate at Sefton! (Or Regents Park) 🤦🏻‍♂️

It's just as stupid as terminating at Tallawong rather than Schofield's 🤦🏻‍♂️

Why do TfNSW always get it so badly wrong? I know they'd have good planners, so is it management or politicians?!?

I wish they designed the platforms to have cross platform interchange but anyways, the new connection between the T6 and Metro is a short walk over. Also could have rebuilt Bankstown into a cut and cover station with tunnel provisions for Sydney Metro extension to Liverpool in the future to the west of the station. Otherwise you’re gonna have to demolish the T6 between Yagoona and Bankstown to build that. But the T6 is only temporary for a decade or two (until that Koograh to Parramatta rail link gets built) which will most likely be another Metro line.

Phil... Please spend a little bit of time on the Sydney Metro website.. the full construction plans are there.

The existing trains platform will be lopped off by about two cars and an at grade concourse to both sides with Opal gates on either side.

Then at the other end the platform will get an extension to accommodate 8 car trains (possibly only on one side as the Lidcombe shuttle wont need it)

platform 3 and 4 would make sense leaving 1 and 2 for sydney trains. to avoid confusion.

Hi Phil and others, what is the device past the end of the Sydney end of the current Bankstown platforms where you were standing, with the large "Circle" of bright blue cables. This is the only one I have seen that is not aligned with the travel direction of the trains. They are all the way along the track, right up to the tunnel entrance north of Sydenham on the new Metro tracks. There is a least one for every station, and there are others close to signals, on both sides of the track. Nobody I have talked to has any idea what they are. I am guessing that they are some sort of train sensing device, maybe like a big metal detector circuit, perhaps as a backup if the flat sensors between the tracks go offline. (Or maybe they're some sort of testing device, to be removed after the Metro starts running.) The one on the Sydney end of Canterbury station platform 2 is probably the most visible, if you want a good look.

Hi Phil, thanks for4 another excellent video. I remember prior to 1981, when I was living in Sydney, I had to travel to Liverpool via Strathfield, as the Bankstown line trains either terminated at Bankstown, or went on to Lidcolme and then ran into the city from there. Hence, I had two ways of traveling by train to Lidcolme from Marrickville, where I used to live, on the Bankstown line. This involved traveling either to Lidcolme via Bankstown or to Redfern and changing into a Lidcolme train from there. As my grandparents used to live at Petersham, I regularly traveled on both lines. It will be interesting to see the changes as time goes on. Anyway, all the very best. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
