Masterworks - You Won't Believe How This Shady Company Scams You

If you read one of their 200+ filings with the SEC, they clearly state where the works are being stored:
"The Painting is currently stored at a warehouse located at 111 Alan Drive, Newark DE 19711 in custody of Delaware Freeport LLC. Shareholders will be notified when the Painting is displayed."

Thank you for your efforts to expose frauds like these. The fact that this was shilled so much made me uncomfortable enough not to bother examining it any further.

I don’t think they are a scam, they tell you exactly what you are getting (presented in the best way possible to make it seem like a good investment) and you actually get what you have paid for.
With that said I haven’t, and won’t be investing in their financial product as I have major concerns:
1) I personally don’t know enough about art, and the art market, to know if I would be making a good investment in any piece of art. (This is likely true for most people).
2) their management fees seem way to high 1.5% per year for just keeping a picture in a secure location - (are they making money from when it is shown in galleries? If so do investors get a share?)
3) 20% take on all profits is far too steep on top of the management costs, also you don’t even see this on traditional stock investments so it’s a major negative
4) As you said the money is trapped with either a poor showing for the US secondary market or no secondary market for the rest of the world.
I don’t see a scam from this company, but it is in my opinion a terrible idea to invest in art with them.

when the economy is going poorly, obviously the go to strategy is investing in a non-producing asset

I researched this company a ton and pretty sure not a scam! No way to be sure but i have experience in analysing companies. So suggest all do their research!

I'm concerned about the fact that masterworks appeared about the same time that fine art auctions where no longer exempt from anti money laundering regulations, I fear it is just another wealth transfer to the already excessively wealthy, Selling their considerably depreciated assets to the "public" before they realise its value has dropped now that fine art can't be used to launder money

As someone who tried masterworks, I can tell you, it's not as shady as all that.
Sure, the marketing absolutely is. It hits you with very selective data to make it seem more profitable. The invitation system too is just there for show.
But, once you sign up, you get a call from one of their team members before you can start purchasing anything and they disclose everything to you.
They tell you about the risk, they tell you if you're in the right income bracket to make a profit, they explain liquidity.

I have had only good experiences so far. If you read the fine print on the agreements, everything checks out. If you only look at the marketing, yeah, it paints a very skewed picture, but so does pretty much all advertising.

I'm gonna keep using it and see how things turn out. I trust MW, although only a couple of years will tell how well they can keep the ship running.

MW is all HYPE. I worked front line sales, the first sales call after you initially give your info on their site. Extremely high turnover for this role bc the work conditions / training are subpar. Their broker staff is so lazy they hire temp workers "literally off the street" to "do the frontline sales call" instead of themselves. Millennial, Juvenile Fratboy culture is what I saw at MW. - Former "temp" salesperson.

Erik Townsend from MacroVoices is also an investor in Masterworks…not the art, the company.

You actually missed the biggest part of this scam: there is an 11% markup placed on the art BEFORE it is marketed for sale. The “returns” they advertise are calculated based on the pre-markup cost!!!

I immediately cancelled the visit and reached out to my bank to dispute the transaction I made on Masterworks.

Being able to fully explain the inner workings of a shady scam company run by assclowns in under 10 minutes is a pretty good indicator of their strength, or lack of, as an investment.

The company seemed suspicious with how vague they were about everything in their marketing. I'm glad that people like you are drawing attention to their lack of transparency, and I hope these kinds of videos pressure them into being more transparent.
