Incredible acting from Pamela and Stephen. Diane Cilento was also excellent. A superb cast and a great storyline. When I look at the actors and actresses today, they are nowhere sense as good as the actors of yesteryear. Very sad that Stephen Boyd died young.

the more 'old' movies I watch the more I see how standards have dropped in the present day - Pamela Franklin was astounding

An intricate and over complicated plot about what one is led to believe is an obsession of an old paedophile for a fourteen year old girl.
The plot ambles all over the place and one is only startled out of near slumber by the sudden increase in volume of either squawking seagulls or loud overdramatic music. It was as though being woken from of a nightmarish experience once the credits began to roll.
Thank God it's over! I thought.

A terrific discovery for me . . . Franklin, the superb cast, the beautiful b&w photography. This came out when Boyd's star was at its peak but got no attention. Zanuck dumped it amid the Cleopatra-induced austerity at Fox. Patricia Neal's part was dropped, even as she was on the verge of winning an Oscar.

Judi Dench's first ever film role though shed been acting in theatre professionally since 1957.

Every inch, a very good film. I did especially savour the richness of the B&W tonal range, quality!

If there were much more Pamela Franklin...WAY less murky mumbo jumbo dialogue...and 30 minutes shorter....a tighter and more impactful film.BUT...she was amazing, and had strong desire to find out how she progressed as the character after all this. Worth watching just for Pamela..

Pamela Franklin gives an amazing, near-perfect performance. And to see Judi Dench at that age!

To say this movie was disturbing would be a great understatement.

This can't help but twist your melon...and there was me thinking he was gonna find the murderer and adopt her and keep the house...dialogue was at times a bit stretched...a slow burner that drops dark at the end...what would the sequel have been...melon twister for sure...

I thought this was top notch and Pamela Franklin was unforgettable. She first made her mark as the ghost haunted child Flora in the brilliant film 'The Innocents'. Stephen Boyd's reserve is part of the movie, his hidden side is meant to keep us guessing. The director was not 'one of the greats' but NOT at all average, quite good. The ending was completely SATISFYING which endings in such films seldom are.

The Third Secret (1964)
A prominent London psychologist seems to have taken his own life, causing stunned disbelief amongst his colleagues and patients. His teenage daughter refuses to believe it was suicide, as this would go against all of the principles for which her father stood, therefore she is convinced it was murder. She enlists the help of a former patient to try to get to the truth. The truth, however, turns out to be surprising and disturbing. - IMDB

Good to also see an Australian actress in this movie, Diane Cilento who was Sean Connery's wife for 12 years. She was born in 1932 in Mooloolaba just north of Brisbane and died in 2011 in Cairns. Jason Connery is their son. lt actually was full of talented actors like Jack Hawkins, Richard Attenborough, Stephen Boyd, Pamela Franklin as Catherine and Judy Dench. An excellent movie for its time.

I've seen this film before. Very talky but Pamela Franklin delivers an excellent performance. Stephen Boyd is handsome as ever but a bit wooden.
