Tip 3. Teach synonyms.
Try to teach words related to the key word. You will help students to better understand connected vocabulary.
Tip 4. Use Pictures.
It is vital to support students with their learning style. If they are visual learners, you may use visual aids, like flashcards.
Tip 5. Guess the translation.
Let students try and guess what translation might be. But make sure that you give them that word in a context. It will give students confidence. When they read, they will try to guess the words rather than immediately using their dictionaries.
Tip 6. Teach Collocations and Phrases.
Teach other connected words. This will help students to use learnt words more often. If you teach the word 'promise', it is better to actually give the verbs which go with that word, so that students know how to use it.

General you don't teach words with similar meaning together at first. Because they can be confused. Once they know one word well then that is when you teach a similar meaning word. I can remember what book mentions this but I'm pretty sure is by I S P Nation.

For a specific category of words, I would recommend to use a graphic organizer to help students to retrieve their own prior knowledge and experience.
