10 Settlement Building Tips that Make Your Life Easier

I know this is a 6 year old video, but I am a latecomer to the Fallout series. My issue is two fold: The only settlements that I can get passed 13 settlers are the Castle and Sanctuary Hills. The other issue is how do you keep happiness so high? All my settlers have enough food and water, they all have beds and jobs, and they have everything that produces happiness. Yet the happiness will be going down for a reason I cant see.

You can use weapon racks to bridge gaps between prebuilt elements and what you've built that are too small to fit another wall in-between. They're also good for simulating boarded-up windows.

Another tip: console commands. They allow for great precision and moving stuff into places you can't normally place them. Learn to use getpos, getangle, setpos, modpos, setangle, and modangle. The get commands give you the selected object's coordinates and orientation on the X, Y, and Z axes. The Set commands place it at the selected coordinate. The "mod" command adjusts its location/angle by a specified amount. For easiest results, click on the object and type "setangle z 0". This will rotate the object to align it to the game's grid. If it needs to face another direction, you can adjust it accordingly, as the angle commands use degrees, so if it needs to face the other way, type "setangle z 180". You can also use the "placethere" command to place objects you don't have room to place or that you couldn't normally add without mods.

There are a few settlements with objects oriented to be in line with the grid, which makes building with commands easier.
-Graygarden: the overpass is aligned.
-Oberland Station: The building and railroad tracks are lined up, though that's not as useful as with other settlements.
-The Slog: the main building is off by only 0.3 degrees, which is close enough for most things.
-Egret Tours Marina: the warehouse is aligned. The main building is off slightly, but again, it's not noticeable.
-Jamaica Plain: The main building is aligned.
-Vault 88: The preset elements are lined up.
-Echo Lake Lumber Mill: The wooden floor pieces that make up the foundation of the ruined barn are lined up.

For those that play Survival Mode, build a drinking fountain or a sink at every settlement. There you can refill any bottle with purified water and no water purifier required. Also, make sure you link all of your settlements with Caravans. That way, you can use the scrap in one settlement at another settlement that is connected

Damn man, build walls and put houses on few floors and defense will be much easier. Of course, cover every point around by missiles. Always build settlement few floors above the ground.
Food: Mutfruit + Corn + Toto = glue and food. Those 3 are enough for self made glue needed for almost everything you need to improve (weapons and armors)
Perks: One of first perks you need is: Strength: Strong Back lv 4. Allow fast travel even if you carry things over carry your weight limit.

Lol I go out and stack my inventory with over +3000lbs of item with everything, guns, junk, etc. You can have infinite resources or just buy them with all the weapons you have

How far in the game do you have to be to give so little of a shit about your weapons that you scrap them? It took me sooo long to get weapons that I like and am comfortable with , to the point I dont pick up anything new.

Anyone know the equivalent to the E key on the Xbox controller?

If you're on PC, you don't need a jetpack. Just type 'tcl' in the console and you disable clipping and being clamped to the ground and can float around however you like.

can't place on flat trash cleaned floors. help? also, how to scrap something that won't scrap when it should.

Yea I dropped my weapons and one or all of my followers pick them up and give them back to me — dude, I was going to get rid of that

I want to add:
- Place power generators and food plants in a higher platform (at least one story high) if you have Wasteland Workshop DLC.
- NEVER use Power Generators from the Vault Tec DLC since the cell reset bug ALWAYS BREAKS them and force you to repair them each time you fast travel in. It can also happen to Fusion Generators from Wasteland Workshop but less often.
- because settlement attackers ALWAYS spawn at GROUND LEVEL.

Do you have to give ammo too or the have automatic ammo

I could really use a guide on how to make a terminal-powered door with a terminal on both the inside and outside. Because the terminals glitch out for me and get stuck on initializing.
These are great tips, though, thanks! The Local Leader perk is also great for settlement building if you're like me and store all your junk and other stuff in Sanctuary (or another settlement).

So ever since the Contraptions DLC came out, I’ve just been mass producing Gauss Cannons, 2EC Ammo, and Heavy Military Armor to arm all my Settlers. I love building .45 Ammo for my Explosive Tommy Gun, .50 for my Hunting Sniper Rifles, and 2EC Ammo for Gauss Cannons. 😊

Just wish I could mass produce Fusion Cores!!! 😭 😂

How to pass the build limitation:
1: Scrap the misc junk that littered all around. food, aid, and junk items as well; those count too.
2: U don't want or, can't scrap anything more? Use the "1 item gone 1 can be build" trick. Whenever u remove or scrap something in the settlement one thing can be build in its place no matter how overfilled it is (if u in the object's sub-menu that is). The trick is that there is no limitation of power-lines, BUT when u remove one it counts as an object being removed, so u can build 1 more thing.
U can do this as many times u want without any mod. Just click on a powerline, store it, build what u want, reconnect the powerline, repeat!
+1 Extra tipp: There are some useful items u can't place into your inventory, but u can hold/drag them: a tire, a shopping cart... If u drag those within the borders of your settlement u can scrap those. P.S. U might want to spare a shopping cart, do to u can pack it full of junk and still carry it.

Usually with guns I sell them.

The year is 2022. and I'm playing Fallout for the 1st time ever and doing it on my ps5. This game is awesome. I have a platinum trophy in Fallout Shelter but it doesnt count to me.
