While visiting the landing beaches and battle places in Normandy 23 years ago I`ve stumbled over this story in the Airborne Museum in Saint Mère Eglise. Fascinating story. I recall having read that he stayed and fought with that Russian tank unit till Berlin in a lend & lease M4 Sherman tank. The Russian tank crew liked him and he was also usefull to them as an interpreter.
The story also stated that after the war during the McCarthy era (anti communism campaign) he got some problems beeing accused having sided with the Russians just because he fought along side with them. The US government gave him some hard times then. Glad to hear that Clinton and Jelzin saw it differently after so many years. This story deserves a full movie like that one from 2001 « Behind Enemy Lines » with Owen Willson.

Cant help but picture the Soviets initial confusion finding an American Soldier in Eastern Germany. 'Sees American. Looks down at map, looks back at the GI, looks down at the map in even more confusion.'
