Art Nouveau in 8 Minutes: Why It Has Never Gone Away?

I loved Art Nouveau all my life, especially as a teenager during the 60's, when it was stripmined for band poster imagery and album art. I see in this excellent documentary that the influence of Art Nouveau fell off at a period just as the automobile was taking over the world. I would have wished, I guess, that a few of the artists could have taken a whack at early automobile design. Who knows what they might have produced? Cars that looked like dragonflies or geishas?

I have always loved this style but never new it was Art Nouveau! ❤

Do not aware about Europe but American with open arms reinvited the art Nouveau as we can see many posters and graphics in cafes and streets.

I was struggling to understand the characteristics of Art Nouveau, but this video helped me put it in perspective!

Why don’t you mention Belgium, it was more the walhalla than France, with architects like Horta, there are more Art Nouveau homes in Belgium than in France that is 80 times bigger than Belgium, that was the real pioneer of the new art, afterwards Art Deco was more associated with France, that’s true

Love Mucha and Gaudi. Also I love the the North European version eg Archibald Knox and Jugendstil. Cleaner lines but still flowing and nature based. Just less frilly and whiplashy.

They were right about mass production making everything look the same. Just look at home decor over the past decade if you don't believe me. Everything looks the same, no matter what magazine it's in. Sad really. I love Art Nouveau and Art Deco even though they are sort of opposites.

This was an epoch when capitalism was seen as positively replacing feudalism and naturally evolving into socialism. And then the various empires struck back and brought us a century of misery that is still going.

Y'all really picked the least Art Nouveau inspired fashion plate from the 1900s and said, 'Sure, that one,' huh? Like, they even had cameras then. There are surviving photos of some really beautiful pieces. There are extent garments. You could have picked a Paquin ballgown. Could have picked a photo of Sarah Bernhardt. But I guess a fashion plate from a spring addition of La Belle Époque thrown in at random suffices.

Interesting that Art Nouveau in some ways it was so decorative, but the craftsman architecture tended to simplicity at the same time. There was less emphasis on Victorian mass produced millwork and more on work that feels handmade.
