Never watched or read the original work (didn't like the art style or the goofy tone -also didn't care for the pirate premise), but fell in love with this live action version despite its flaws (some bad acting esp. from the child actors and even from Luffy/Zorro during some pivotal emotional scenes and questionable story decisions): Felt Usopp's backstory was pretty thin and agree with manga/anime watchers that they should have fleshed him out better; many villagers felt very one-dimensional/stupid and it often felt like they existed as cannon fodder to prop up the more major characters; was also disappointed that Nami's own sister easily believed her betrayal while Luffy, who only just met her, continued to believe in her no matter what -heard that in the original, her sister and all the villagers secretly knew the truth and just played along. I found that revelation to be much more believable as it gives more nuance/complexity to Nami's sister as well as the other Coco villagers. There's some more problems that I'm too lazy to list...

But despite the flaws, the live action ultimately succeeded in its goal of reeling in people like me who would never have given the anime/manga a chance. For the most part, the creators managed to make a palatable version of the first several arcs that has that addictive "it" factor and features a cast of lovable/nuanced characters with awesome chemistry! Now, I'm hooked and am currently watching the anime (One Pace version with an episode guide for additional episodes to watch) with my sister. We already have a huge bias for the world and characters, so it's been fairly smooth sailing...

Lastly, I'm just relieved that we finally have an adaptation worthy of discussion, praise, and constructive criticism instead of all the dumpster fire remakes/reboots that's been plaguing media of late that doesn't even merit basic discussion. What a breath of fresh air! It's everything the "Wheel of time" adaptation should have been, but isn't (also never read the original books, but found the show to be dreadful on its own).

I feel Oda is spoiling some plots of the manga, for example, electricity. If the void century was with high tech, it makes sense for it to have electricity in the islands. Cocodrile appearing as a woman, can be a joke to the teory Luffy's mom is cocodrile 😂

It’s weird that they had to make changes because they didn’t have an infinite budget and people want to complain about them cutting out what is millions of dollars worth of filming.

I hate how art direction of 3d animators is the opposite interest of the 2d sources. Like with pokemon. 2d artists usually like goofy and less realist looking things. The DISGUSTING realist 3d animators only like grotesque depictions. It is horrible! Like with the pokemon movie. This ISN'T more realistic. People have and love animals. There are FAR FAR FAR more adorable and lovable animals in our world then gross off-putting creatures. They always go with this 1% type creatures. gross!

AMAZING CHOICE don kreig is ESSENTIAL to the story setting up a sort of “ideal” pirate that just couldn’t cut it cuz he wouldn’t face danger or risk his life and get stronger chasing his dream like the straw hats

I don't think they should play with character's heights. We can take people's height in the manga as a measure of might instead of physical appearance. Besides, characters change height depending on the scene for different emotional effect. The same way Luffy can be small and mighty, everyone else doesn't need to be a literal giant to be super strong. Plus it simplifies the casting and imparts less pressure to the CGI department so they can focus on other things. Keeps it simple and the show is trying to be more realistic in that sense it seems.

The change to live action is the worst thing that could happen to any series with a define artstyle. The fact that people think this is a positive thing makes me sick.

I think some changes were made to flesh out the characters more - like with Zoro - in the anime we didn't really see him "pirate hunting", he was just famous from the start. Garp storyline could be pushed forward to avoid flashbacks later as the training Coby & Helmeppo had was sort of parallel to Luffy's journey. Fun fact: in the anime they realize Garp & Luffy are related in Enies Loby arc, ep 314. Neon signs were introduced to not make it super dark (as in the anime the colors are super bright and it would be difficult to do the same in live action).

The material is so vast that to adapt everything they would need like 30+ seasons. I hope they won't skip too much, but some of the side-stories would definitely be omitted.

Overall, as a series fan (meaning both anime & manga) I am quite satisfied they didn't make it a cringe fest. Changes were for the most part necessary. And the crazy characters designs were mostly kept (especially that Kuro jacket😉). Looking forward to the next season.

Yea, I think they're lying when they say OP fans made this. Too many horrible changes. And I don't care if Oda endorses it or not. He loves money and fame too. I'm tired of hearing that it's good because the OG creator backs it. "You should love it, as a OP fan, the creator's behind it!" -Normie. So, is that how we qualify "good" nowadays? If we like something the creator did at some point, anything with their name attached is automatically good now? We don't go by merit anymore?

These changes are mostly inconsequential changes that were made just to be different from the original. In most cases they're worse changes, and in a few others not good or bad, just different. So why make them? Why not just represent the manga/anime as is? I'm tired of normies and new "fans" telling me that I'm tripping over this and gaslighting me as a result. This was ridiculous (and not in a good way), and I couldn't watch it past episode 1 (even with high hopes). I appreciate videos like this for helping me realize that I made the right choice to not waste my time any further.

This series just gives lazy non-fans an excuse to not watch the anime, an anime I think all people should experience. People prefer easy consumption over good story now, it seems. I see many of my favorite reactors that I wanted to start OP, start this instead. Now I don't even want to see their original OP reaction (if they ever feel the need to do it now), because the first reaction's been tainted by this crap. Apply that to every other area of influence, and it's kind of depressing, tbh.

Feels like Rings of Power and the co-opting of the Tolkien fanbase (also me) all over again. F*ck Netflix.

Can't beleive they destroyed the characters by removing the negatives that make them human and relatable. Zoro is ignorant and stuck in his ways. Sanji is a simping degenerate. Luffy is the lovable idiot not the brains. And then they doubles down on usopp. His whole point is he can't fight without love. The reason he was so good to merry was born from love, not being a shipwright. It takes away so much from usopps character

There are 1089 episodes in the manga. They're eight episodes of the live action. Have you ever heard of an exposition dump? They had a lot of exposition to dump so that we'd be caught up. I haven't watched the mega. If they didn't give me all of that information I'd be completely lost.

What? Nami’s staff is definitely collapsible in the anime. She opens her arms and pulls it out, going from split from 3 small pieces to “one piece” making it a bow staff.

The only things I don't like so far are parts of the camera direction, the fight choreography (but I'm sure they'll improve apon that) and a few other minor continuity issues that you mentioned already. Aside from that I also really don't like that the people of Nami's village didn't know about her sacrifice, and that the windmill guy doesn't have his windwill. Many of the other minor issues are excusable due to it being live action and not anime, so there are limitations to what can be done without breaking the fine line between a success and a flop. And I think the choices of Sanji's curly brows being normal and Usopp's nose not being long are parts of why this works so well.

I love the change of Nami being more capable in every way and Coby having a bigger importance in the story, showing his growth, mirroring Luffy's. So I hope they keep doing that. I also like that, while Luffy's still carefree and full of wonder, he's not as much of an airhead in important situations. I think it was a cool idea to indroduce Zoro by him cutting down Mr. 7, as he mentioned in the manga that he tried to recruit him before he met Luffy, and I liked that they actually showed the storyline of Jeff eating his leg so that Sanji could live. Additionally, as you said, I love the depiction of Sanji. He basically was like that in the beginning of the manga as well and got gradually worse over the course of the story, especially after the time skip. So I hope they let him keep his cool and flirty, but not too pushy demeanor in this all the way through.

Overall I'm excited to see what comes next and I think this serves greatly as indroduction for new people to the world of One Piece who understandably find the sheer amount of chapters and episodes too intimidating and gives Oda the chance to change stuff he isn't retrospectively happy about (as long as some dude doesn't convince him to include something as I heard this was the case with Garp).

Also: I think it makes sense for Usopp to mess up their first cannon fight. The dude is a scaredy cat, never left his Island and never was in a situation where he actually had to handle a cannon, even in the manga he kinda hit that rock accidentally.
