I curious do you use hydrogap over your zip? It seams you have a large over hang there, is it needed in your area?

Do your doors require the removal of a factory screw on the upper hinge and the installation of a 3” screw in its place to prevent door sag?

Finally after yrs of following you ( well 2 nd time actually) you are doing what I do for a living ( well actually part of a living I hv a pension so I get to choose my jobs). I hv repaired so many exterior doors improperly installed such as shimming behind hinges instead as Gary teaches ( I think he learned from brothers of door company?). I just repaired or re installed a really expensive heavy door with the blinds inside the framed glass. They ( A GC employee) used 15/8 “ deck screws and cabinet door screws ?
Then charged this elderly lady a huge overcharge to hang it wrong ( like $600).
This is a great video ! Of course I like all your videos ! ( we need more dance videos brother 🧑) .

Never say "Never" when it comes to water ingress. Those words have come back to haunt more builders, architects, and engineers than you can count on all your fingers and toes. Even rocket scientists have been burned by that ideology. On that Note, I want to say I have enjoyed your videos this past year, and I wish you, your family, and your crew a joyful and safe holiday season! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This was super informative, I passed my interior finish class last week and I'm looking forward to exterior finish soon. My one gripe is you keep mentioning that you're using the shims to even the reveal, when I think you mean even the gap. I always thought the reveal is what shows of the jamb from behind your trim, but maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's an east coast west coast vernacular thing? Anyways, not holding anything against you, us short kings gotta look out for each other, that's all. Awesome video from the awesome framers, as always. Keep up the good work, buddy.

Wait, you level the hinges, fix the jamb on both sides, at the very top and bottom, then wedge your hinges in or out to even up the reveal gap? But now your hinges are out of level and your reveal gaps are messed up. If for example, you just wedge the bottom hinge , the door, on the striker side, lifts up at the top and over at the bottom, thereby ruining the revel gap. Also using wedges tends to make the door side good, but can spread the jamb (perpendicular to the door) especially at the bottom. Use wedges opposing each other or packers. We frame, install joinery, clad and finish. So leaving all the annoying things for the finish carpenter to deal with is making your own job harder.

Why didn't you put the tape under the flashing??? I've fought with putting doors in this this. No I take the door off and set the hinge side plub and then put the door back on and set it.

When I put shims in from just one side and then a screw, it seems to twist the jam just a bit. I may try the trim heads since the smaller head may not pull as much. I struggle with shims way more than I should.
And yep, since learning from Gary's video even I could hang a door myself and effectively!

I’ve attended many JLC Live shows, usually in Providence, RI but once in Baltimore. A friend went with me one year and after the show referred to Gary as Dr. Katz.
p.s. you want the head jamb perfect so your trim carpenters can look awesome too

Timmy!!! Everything you said at the end is dead on. I recently stopped doing big jobs and I now work for the local school system. Within 2-3 years most of the competent carpenters will retire. My hope is to train the next generation.

Keep up the great work!

Ps. The first carpenter I ever worked for taught me, never nail in your shim. 1) 16d hdgal will split it and 2) you can’t adjust it after you set the nail.

Sorry a tad long, but what a great video with such a sincere message.

Nice video!, not sure if you ever get the pleasure to install the latches and handles. But if you do, could you maybe post a video sometime of it? The pre-notched spots for the plates are off many times. And I almost always have to chisel the latches out for the door handle and bolts to properly operate.

Thank you for saying you are "setting" and "installing" the door, not hanging it. Searching for hanging door guides is almost as difficult as hanging a door, because so many door frame install guides are mis-labeled as hanging guides. In any case, never try to hang a door everybody, it's voodoo lol

Great videos, thanks

Our installation is basically the same however we also install a 2-1/2' or 3" screw on the inner hole of the hinge into the jam to allow us to secure to the framing which has allowed us minor reaveal adjustment opportunities down the road over the years if the house acclimates.

I am a 60 year old custom home design / builder in Eastern North Carolina and appreciate these videos since yes, there are no real trade schools anymore for our younger generation

Where you located, here in Kansas, would add a foam threshold sealer, to stop the water, air and insect penetration.
The caulking dries out/ shrinks, get gaps after door adjustment

For the love of God, please call it the door jamb! Yes, it is also the door frame, but when you're trying to explain on a video and differentiate from the house framing it just makes sense to switch it up.

There’s a better and faster way to do that. First, You should’ve leveled your riser underneath the door perfectly first. Now that you have shimmed the door on top of the piece that you do with taped, you now have a gap underneath your sill and every time somebody steps there it’s going to flex. If you shimmed underneath your riser first, then everything would be nice and tight. Second, using your long level, shim, the hinge side perfectly at each hinge point and the top corner. Now you don’t have to wrestle with the door once you’ve put it in place. The bottom and the hinge side will be perfect once you put it in.

Trivia - generally "braces" are a more sophisticated support system that is attached to suit pants with coordinated buttons and "suspenders" are less sophisticated yet functional and connect to pants with clips. Pro tip - for exterior doors, you might want to try and slip in some sheet metal down the legs of the jams so that when you are finished with the install the door is significantly more difficult to knock down. Thanks for sharing... 😁👍
