After Makhachev's fifth-round submission win over Dustin Poirier, he expressed a desire to compete for the welterweight title, which Edwards will defend against Belal Muhammad at UFC 304 in July. Edwards acknowledged the challenge but emphasized that both fighters have obstacles to overcome in their current divisions first.

"I welcome it," Edwards told Sky Sports. "I feel like we both have work to do within our divisions. Makhachev just had his first title defense against a true lightweight, so he needs to face more lightweights before moving up."

"But if we both have long reigns, then why not? We’re both around the same age, 30, so we have time to make it happen."

Edwards aims to defend his title for the third time against Muhammad, following their first bout that ended in a no contest due to an accidental eye poke. Edwards' last fight was a decisive win over Colby Covington at UFC 296 in December.

If successful, Edwards may face undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov, while Makhachev has Arman Tsarukyan as a top contender for the lightweight belt. Edwards wants to clear his division's contenders before considering a move up or allowing Makhachev to move up.

“It’s a huge fight,” Edwards said. “But I have work to do in my division first, and then the superfights will come.”

Jamie Theodosi reported on June 5, 2024, that Edwards dismissed Makhachev’s immediate ambitions for a second belt, highlighting their need to focus on their current divisions.

Makhachev, after tying the record for the most UFC lightweight title defenses with his win over Poirier, expressed his dream to fight for a second belt at welterweight.

Edwards, who last defended his title against Covington in December, acknowledged the idea but reiterated the need for both fighters to address their divisional challenges first.

Edwards is set to defend his title against Muhammad at UFC 304 on July 27. Makhachev had been offered a fight against Edwards for UFC 300, but declined due to a scheduling conflict with Ramadan.

“I welcome it, but we both have work to do in our divisions. Unless we both have long reigns, then why not?” Edwards told Sky Sports.
