so how good or bad is Nextcloud in comparison? I use Nextcloud and Syncthing. Sounds like he is selling us Synology.
ОтветитьThank you Rob, sure learning a lot from you!
ОтветитьI've become a fan of Tailscale as a replacement for traditional VPNs. I've never tried a VPN setup at home, but Tailscale setup was quite easy.
Tailscale has a way to punch through NAT firewalls and does allow your preconfigured, trusted devices to be able to connect to internal devices.
What are your thoughts on Synology's Photo/Moments app with face recognition? As an ex-google photos user, I've been looking for something close google's offering which is top notch.
ОтветитьI guess people trade their privacy for convenience.
Ответитьwhat about nextcloud?
ОтветитьWhy you delete my comment about that trash? Sick on you and your method to make views on ads! THAT IS NOT A CLOUD, IS JUST A CASE WITH HDDs THE SERVER IS NOT YOURS AND THAT ISN'T A PRIVACY SYSTEM. STOP, LYING ALL OF YOUR FOLLOWERS!!!!!
ОтветитьNever used these services. Not only because of privacy. But also, what if THEIR hardware fails? I might be able to rescue broken storage devices here at home or give it to someone to do that for me. I can't do that with hardware I can't even locate or that I don't even own.
ОтветитьDisaster recovery. If you don't have an off-site copy you are susceptible to theft, fire, earthquake, hurricane, etc. For local backups this method is really nice. Getting a friend or neighbor to also use this method would allow for off-site backups, susceptible however to the same fire or hurricane.
ОтветитьI'm not hooked on the idea of a proprietary NAS solutions (like synology), much rather build my own, it really not that complex with a bit of research.
ОтветитьNext Brax product… “BraxRaid”!
ОтветитьAgree completely. As an IT professional since the 80s, have never trusted these "innovations" that pander to the uninformed consumer/end-user. Don't trust the Internet.
ОтветитьThis is very helpful! What options do I have, if i need backup without paying Synology? You spoke initially about RAID, wont it automatically backup data between the 2 drives in NAS at a set frequency?
ОтветитьI have installed a private cloud based on Synology and have a VPN server based on RaspberryPi OpenVPN. Have configured an encrypted backup storage for Synology NAS as well. I can now access all my files from anywhere else in the world and also provide access to those I want to. I am not a fan of public cloud storage for privacy purposes and do not want to pay for storage in perpetuity. Thanks for this video.
ОтветитьI never embraced the terms 'cloud storage' and 'cloud computing.' This is just double-speak for 'storing my stuff on someone else's computer.' Why would anyone do this?? Well, in all honesty, I do have a small handful of files which I deliberately intended to share with the World, so I have placed them in a google drive, but I would NEVER put any of my personal or sensitive files there.
I've worked with Synology NAS devices before and love them. They are very elegant and have a powerful suite of software for doing loads of interesting things. However, these may already be overkill for most home users. I have a couple of solutions for my needs. First, I have a router with a USB port, into which I've plugged a 1 TB portable drive. It is easily accessible to all devices in my house and is more than adequate for transferring and storing lots of data. Notably, like other NAS solutions, it is always available. I also have a couple of DNAP Raid boxes, each with 4 hard drives in a raid configuration. These have many of the advantages of the NAS, except they are a LOT cheaper and they are not directly attached to the network, although I can easily share folders which then would be. The disadvantage is that my main computer needs to be powered up for other devices to access them. Not a biggy for me ... just depends.
I just started watching your channel, so perhaps this common knowledge to the more seasoned fans of your work, but do live on a boat or house boat?
ОтветитьIn case you host all your precious data only on a server at home, you will lose all your data in case of a catastrophic event at your home, like flooding, fire or theft.
My advice is to always backup your data to a secure could provider. With a free tool like Rclone it is very easy to back up your data regularly to a local server and to a cloud provider.
Clouds suck. Make your own.
Ответитьdont forget Adobe...
ОтветитьThe majority will never use open source because slavery is intrinsic to humans. Only 10% are like us here. The rest are sheep
ОтветитьI presume you'd just put this device near your router and connect it with a network cable?
ОтветитьI don't like the "cloud" either. I see nothing wrong with my own drives. They can be USB thumb drives, hard drives or SSDs. Hard drives may be slower but they last a really long time as long as you don't drop them. Also don't smoke near them.
Ответить@robbraxmantech, It all sounds great, but how do we know Synology platform is not a spyware itself?
Is there a personal and home cloud solution that does not involve using a third party for data transfer?
Is there a way we can establish a P2P connection between, let's say, a phone and the NAS cloud system at home?
I just tried out a few "security cameras" that they are all selling nowadays. They all push cloud storage, many will not even let you access the camera unless you have it connected to the internet. It is hard as heck to find an AP camera (Access Point Camera) which does not require an internet connected wifi router. I have setup a local wifi that is not connected to the internet, and these cameras will not allow themselves to be setup unless you have an internet connected wifi. In the meantime, they all demand your wifi passwords just to use your local camera.
ОтветитьSynology and its clones are insecure by design, they china made, use non ecc ram.
ОтветитьThank you so much Rob big fan here, can i ask for your advice i have an old Nas, Transcend NAS "StoreJet Cloud 210N, do i should move to Synology? Thank you so much, great work.
ОтветитьSay it with me everyone.. "The cloud is just someone ELSES computer"
ОтветитьYes and the way he sta5es to do this using Synology is now you are trusting Synology security and that they are not accessing your data or have backdoirs they give to gov agencies etc. you dan just setup a vpn into your firewall thru to a port opened to your cloud server that is on the. Dmz segment of your home network.
ОтветитьWhich is why you use encryption on your data before uploading. You can even 2ith a virtual drive setup can encrypt\decrypt on the fly.
The worst thing you can possibly do is host a cloud server on your home network with port opened to the internet. 99.99% of corporate, finacial, even security corps network breechs are thru their web facing portal. These are companies that spend 10s of millions on IT. Think about that. But somehow this guy is saying run your own webserver thru your home network. To do this properly requires a real separate firewall machine and the cloud which is really just a sata server as its not a load balanced distributed data as a cloud setup typically is. Cloud is really just a marketing term as its catchy and seems magical. Its not. But what it is if you want access to it both in your home internal hetwork as well as extrenallyis a hole and huge atrack vector for your home network. Your firewall box is what your home internet modem, be it cable fiber dsl sat, will be connected to . This vs usually the modem is connected to your wifi router in a typical home not using a modem wifi router combo unit supplied to customer. Now the firewall box is really just software in a computer with multiple nic cards. So modem to firewall. Qt the firewall anothernic is connected to your home wifi router or whatever you use for your home network. Another nic card is connected to your cloud \ data server. Beyond that the firewall server only allows a couple ports to ve open from that cloud server to the modem. Badically a hardware firewall is a very advances router with way moresecurity that typically has only a few network ports(a min of 2). Now I honestly think every home network should have a properly setup forewall box between the internet modem and the home networks router. Just about any old computer thats likely not fast enough for regular use can be used as a firewall. You will just needto add a nic card or two.
People seem to think a router with NATis all the security you need to not be hacked. If thats the dase then this is all you would see protecting corp networks from the internet. But they donnot they all have firewall boxes, network security apps monitoring even internal activity. All looking for bad behavior coming in from the internet. I ter et of things are the worst security risks yet technthey are being protected by NAT. This is really a subject volumes of books have been written. Pount being you do not want to just throw something like this together. It takesreal network knowledge and skill.
This solution depends on how secure you want to be. It is certain security issues by channeling all your NAS traffic through a third party (in this case Synology) via their relay service. And the use case here was to eliminate third party cloud services like Google, Apple, Amazon and so on. Port forwarding also has its issues, if you can't guarantee you are able to secure your NAS properly. It is unnecessary to make your NAS available to the whole internet if the use case is to make it available just for you (and maybe some family members). A third option is to set up OpenVPN against your home network, on a hardware device of your choice, and first connect through VPN, before connecting to your NAS.
ОтветитьFreeNAS? TrueNAS? No need to depend on Synology
ОтветитьYou're the loudest voice on the internet period.
ОтветитьRob - would the same be achievable with a VLAN (Tagging) + VPN + Secure DNS + SSL Certs?
ОтветитьIce drive 🧊 is pretty cool too if you want secure private cloud storage.
ОтветитьI don't use the cloud for one reason. I don't know who own or runs the cloud therefore don't trust them.
ОтветитьHad a Synology NAS for years but could never get Quickconnect to work until I ditched my Netis router. Was never sure if it was defective or just contrary.
ОтветитьWhat about True Nas? Will you do a video about it?
ОтветитьI like your videos. Would you think a good business model would be to create services to specifically cater to privacy? Where people that join would pay a small monthly fee?
ОтветитьWhat do you think about hosting a wireguard vpn and access the local network with wireguard ?
ОтветитьI must be missing something. I thought the synology mobile apps reported usage data to google
ОтветитьGreat video, Rob, and thanks for sharing! Why did you opt for mechanical drives vs SSD?
ОтветитьHello thank you for the video and information. I’m just looking to backup my photos and videos from my 2 iPhones which are taking up aprox 400 GB of space. Which size he’d drives do you recommend? Thanks
ОтветитьDo you recommend any way to avoid port forwarding for a home email server? When on a recent ocean cruise while at sea, ZeroTier and the jump desktop failed to connect, while teamviewer desktop did connect. Any feedback on Synology working on a cruise Wi-Fi system at sea?
ОтветитьThis was EXCELLENT! I’d love to see more Synology videos from a privacy mindset! Thanks you!
ОтветитьWhat is you opinion about Fritz!Nas?
ОтветитьHi is there an app to use for social media back ups?? That’s 1TB
ОтветитьRob is the leading voice for privacy solutions and is an awesome advocate for true freedom. Thanks Rob.
ОтветитьRob I need help. My iPhone continues to keep getting hacked even after restoring multiple times. 😢. The way I know is co workers at work make fun of my private life. What can I do.
Ответитьwow. How old is Rob? I bow to your knowledge Subbed straight away with no second thought
ОтветитьOnly watched 5 seconds so far but this guy rules
