Thanks to this video i was able to de-solder the display from a W1209 Temperature relay without any problems using a cheap solder sucker and just enough solder to keep the tip of my iron wet and shiny, and the iron was a cheap 5w usb iron powered from a phone charger power bank.
I used a small screwdriver after i used the sucker to free the pins from the through hole that were still caught , this video made that possible as i don't think i would have thought of that.

Great video. Remembers me also of wrong things i did in the past :-) Currently i have a PC Engine on my desk which needs a new flex cable but before installing it 84 through hole pins attached on each side have to be cleaned. I already cut the old cable which may have been not the best idea. I tried to desolder the first pin with iron and pump but gave up after ten minutes. Didn‘t know that the rest of the lead will also make it harder to remove all of the old solder. I will give it to a friend with a desolder gun. Thank you for the explanation.

I wish I watched this yesterday. I did some soldering for the first time. I replaced a joystick on an Xbox controller. All this is great advice. Removing solder sucks!

Cool tip with adding the solder to the iron, I had just been heating up the copper and not understanding how it worked lol

thanks for the helpfull vid. i didn't learn much from it but i recently ran into a roadblock recaping a original xbox, one pin in pticular my solder iron is not transfering enough heat to melt all the solder in a simgle via conected to a large ground plane easily or consistantly and the board is kind of thick. i managed to melt all the solder a couple times cuz i got the cap out withought damaging the via but i can't manage to desolder it with my whick or small solder pump because of this and i don't have low melt solder yet(ordered some spicificaly for this). i'm prety sure my iron's tip isn't holding heat well if it does i probably would have the whole recapeing done a couple weeks ago so any helpful information i get helps until i can finaly desolder the via. It's geting anoying knowing my 80W iron is slowing down my work because the inefficient heat transfer design and the station doesn't suport well designed irons D:

if you wanna unsolder mosfets with heatsink, do yourself a favor: remove the heatsink or ad a thermocoupler to it to heat it up during soldering, so you don't loose all the soldering heat to the heatsink.

Wick is absolutey terible and never worked for me. The manual desolder pumpt is the main tool, and for complicated cases I use the desolder gun or the other methos you mentioned,

On old boards you will rip the trace off the board if you push the stuck pins while the solder is un-melted.

Solder suckers are messy. Clip the leads of the components being remove first. The use the wick.

Bro I know this is an older video from like 11 years ago however I just wanted to thank you for adding in the helpful bits of information that are rarely discussed in regard to the topic of desoldering component on circuit boards. Specifically the adding solder to the iron PRIOR to using wick! I have been doing it wrong for all this time and that tip alone will be beneficial to me here in the near future so once again, thank you!

I’m not sure if you still check your page or the old video comments however I do have a question about solder wick. You mentioned the braid having flux and demonstrated that by burning it off, so my question is can you use a flux pen to reapply a small amount to the dried out wick to rejuvenate it? May seem ridiculous to be so frugal however I cannot get solder wick locally and in a pinch, it might be necessary to get the job done. Thanks in advance!

I found your video after failing to desolder a button from a PCB. Luckily, the button worked better after plainly re-soldering it so I was good.
I did not add solder to the wick though and maybe such a desoldering gun would do the trick next time.
Thanks for helping a begginer out.

Very helpful! I often have problems on through hole which have solder on both. If i use the solder sucker in most cases a tiny bit of solder remains in the middle of the hole. Adding new solder and suck it away again usually does not work. I have broken so many pads because of that.
