Objective

The frequency and intensity of natural disasters have been growing steadily over the past 20 years, killing approximately 850,000 people between 1980 and 2014. What is even worse: only 2% of losses are insured in developing countries. To deal with these natural hazards and their terrible consequences, we need a plan that outlines how governments, businesses, communities, and individuals can best prepare themselves before a hazard strikes as well as best respond afterwards. It is for this reason that the Advancing Climate Risk Insurance Plus (ACRI+) together with EasyFilms has created the film on “The Integrated Approach to Disaster Risk Management”.

This film shows the importance of climate risk insurance in each phase of the disaster risk management cycle: prevent, residual risk, prepare, respond and recover. The films starts with the prevent phase which focuses on how a risk analysis shows cities and business what their biggest threats are. It also highlights the importance of implementing prevention measures to reduce risks as much as possible. Addressing residual risk illustrates how risk transfer solutions can help individuals and communities deal with the hazards that they are still exposed too after prevention measures have already been taken. We then move on to the prepare phase which stresses the importance of creating contingency plans before a hazard strikes. Respond then deals with the first actions that should be taken after a natural hazard hits a community. Recover lastly goes over what measures need to be taken to ensure that the government, businesses, and individuals are better prepared for next time. The film shows the importance of using an integrated approach in which all of the phases are interconnected with the help of risk transfer solutions.
