This is one of my favorite movies. Outstanding script and acting. So glad James Coburn won an Oscar for it-well deserved.
ОтветитьStaggering film.
ОтветитьI also read the book; the movie is a good counterpart and that can’t be said about every movie after reading its book; to expound, in many cases, I couldn’t enjoy a movie after reading its book, because the movie was poor and, thus, disappointing, even insulting, in the wake of its so good book. Conversely, some movies were better than their books but these were matches for each other. That’s rare.
I actually saw the movie first and, as in cases like Gone With the Wind, it was so good it made me curious about the book. I blazed through the former in three days and the latter in five. For me, that’s the speed of light because I don’t read for speed, I always take my time and savor but these books were that intense, engaging and so good. I’ve read Affliction twice and seen the movie four times. I read Gone With the Wind twice and seen the movie 3 times.
Both the Affliction counterparts are among my all time favorites - what a cast! What writers! What a director! And what a book!
I loved what James, Nick, Willem and Paul said, I savored every word. I love them all. And, I love Sissy. This makes Mesa to watch the movie again. And read the book again.
Fantastic movie!!! Outstandingly talented actors, all of them!!!. Directors relentless conviction and passion for believing in this film..... Coburn was strong and clearly the right man for the roll he plaid.
Nolte tough, demanding, complex roll. Did an outstanding job!!!
Sissy Spacek, Defoe..... outstanding!!!
Painful to watch from time to time, but really an excellent movie just the same.
I wish more filmmakers were like Paul Schrader. He is a master at creating realistic, believable characters who aren't inherently likeable, but "real" nonetheless. Gritty, raw, realistic, character-driven, noirish crime thrillers are my favorite kinds of films with "psychological horror" close behind.
ОтветитьMy mother wasn't an alcoholic, but sure as shit was just as mean. My father is an alcoholic, got sober and had another family. The physical abuse was one thing, but the indifference and confidence in sobriety and anger are worse.
ОтветитьBrilliant, devastating, horrifying, shocking, and fucking intense film making!!!!
ОтветитьMasters. Of all them.
Ответитьa glorified add
ОтветитьBest film ever to me.
ОтветитьThe only reason I watched this movie was to see Coburn’s Oscar performance. He didn’t disappoint, but what a horribly miserable movie
ОтветитьOld man was good
ОтветитьIn all sibling relationships in homes in which there’s violence, verbal abuse, and constant fear, will be tainted for the rest of their lives.
Siblings should be with you long after your parents are gone. They are your family, and ideally, you can all rely on one another. Abusive parents inevitably divide their children against one another, leaving them with only fragments of family after they’re gone.
That was a great interview
ОтветитьNick Nolte is so underrated, but he is an extraordinary actor ! he deserved to win an Oscar in 1998 for AFFLICTION and THIN RED LINE ! in both films he gave an extraordinary performances..
ОтветитьOnly 25 comments. Folks that are paying for Master Class for film should skip a month and just watch this. Great novel, but an even better movie. The story is so bone real it can be hard to look at. As heavy as the movie is, I love to listen to these guys laugh so hard. I just wish Sissy was in this interview with them. A female perspective on a story like this needs to be part of the conversation. Still, an amazing discussion.
ОтветитьI find it interesting that Sissy is missing. But, the realisation that this is my family. But we were girls. I'm 49. I watch this interview today and now I understand. Never too old.
ОтветитьNick Nolte Uplifted James Coburn Won Film Academy Award,William Defoe,Sissy Brought Characters To Be A Family.
ОтветитьI miss dialogue like this being commonplace on mainstream media. Our collective culture has been stupifed by smart phones and short term content.
ОтветитьNolte slightly grizzled in this....
ОтветитьIt's an excellent novel.
ОтветитьRIP James Coburn (August 31, 1928 – November 18, 2002), aged 74
And
RIP Russell Banks (March 28, 1940 – January 7, 2023), aged 82
You both will be remembered as legends.
Nolte’s Cobrun’s Spacek’s and Schrader’s best work. Dafoe wasn’t too shabby either
Just leave it Wade! Just leave it! Praise the lord !!
The scene of Wade in the grader is stunning. Movie is absolute perfection. Every bit player is perfect. Fargo like performances by all. Should have swept every award
