i do think the metroidvania esque progression and deliberate veriaty in attention-requirements deserves a special mention.

if you want to level mining for example there are 6 ways to level it. super high attention method, rescource efficient method, low input/ second monitor method and a method to gain valuable ores while training mining.
this is true for EVERY skill in the game.

now, its important to note that these training methods are not available at every level. which means if you are interested in unlocking it, there are often quest/ item requirements for them.
these quest/item requirements then have a couple up to a dozen different requirements for skills/ items/ account progression.

this leads to a network of different unlocks and milestones that improve your character.

you might not feel like mining today and instead want to do some combat; thats fine because youll need better combat stats for the next quest anyways and this quest unlocks a new area with a new mining method in the future.

this feeling of "whatever i do ill improve my character in a meaningful way" is then multiplied by the fact that ( as you said in the video) there is almost no powercreep or content degredation. so its all essentially permanent

the cool thing that i personally think helped the player base is the fact you can play on your phone. people can just chill on the couch while afk. i know a lot of friends that afk on the phone while chilling with their wife and kids. And then when you have free time you get on the computer to do more complex things on the game

i know people wont agree, but i wish we would get more animations for combat. I dont want abilities and what not, but i would like to see my character utilize different angles of attack atleast.

because it's what an MMO should be a bunch of bars that go up faster with teamwork you can play runescape in an ironman but its actually hard to do that. also we have democracy I didn't play og runscape I pefer it over other MMO's on it's own merits.

If osrs had a better questing system that I didn’t have to sit on Wikipedia to figure out I’d love it. It’s so frustrating sitting and reading tutorials for hours to figure out quests

We should also think about the turnover here!! For instance, I am 30 years old, both of my boys are 7 years old. I started playing at 7. In 2002. I regularly let them on my accounts to play around, run around and die or whatever they want. They have taken a big interest. 😎 that’s 2 more new players for the future of osrs.

ESO (Elder Scrolls Online), and RuneScape are the only games I play at the moment, I tried other games but they just don’t do it for me, we got Throne and Liberty recently but that game was complete garbage and I stopped playing after a couple of weeks (never had high expectations anyways), Warframe is alright but still nothing special and not worth it for a new player to begin a journey their, if I had a PC I’d probably dip my toes into World of Warcraft and or Guildwars 2 if the population of those games were decent… we just haven’t gotten any solid MMO’s in recent years so gems like RuneScape who’ve remained consistent with their updates have thrived lately.. but in 2025 we’ll be getting Dune Awakening, possibly Light no Fire, and possibly Archage Chronicles

OSRS is a sandbox journey that doesn't suit everyone. Not everyone is built for Gielinor. It's a long, long, long grind that you never truly quit. You create your own goals and crush them and come back and do it again, forever... And you'll love it. Otherwise, you'll never get trapped in the world to begin with.

Can’t speak for anyone else but myself but I have played RuneScape since classic. I take breaks often because I couldn’t afford a pc that could run RuneScape an this was pre mobile. RuneScape is an amazing classic game that competed with WoW for the best MMO back in the day and the gameplay a community always kept drawing me back. 1 day I would like to max my account if I get the time

played since RS CLassic in 2001, i know why its so good, playing classic wow atm though, but thinking of playing it on the side again

Started with RS back in like 07 as a younger kid because it was free, also since played wow (like wow classic), eso, bdo, and too many others to mention. The thing is the questing in OSRS is by far the best in any mmo I have ever played. They don't follow the accept<collect/kill<complete cycle like all other mmos. My honest opinion. If the graphics bother you get the runelite app and use the HD 117 plug in. Makes it looks much better and then turns it more into an art style than just old graphics.

Runescape is an incredible incremental RPG. Its just too bad its shackled to Jagex. Its hard to get invested in the game knowing progress is tied to an account that can be easily stolen or falsely banned due to their over reliance on broken automated support systems while jagex's human support is non-existent.

Part Runescape's character was how simple it was and that you didn't need and expensive PC to play it. Although Java based technology allowed you the convenience to play it anywhere,
it's graphical capabilities were very limited. That technology has significantly improved, and now Runescape is on the level of WoW. That's why Runescape has lost popularity.

I have been playing RuneScape on and off since 2002, it's probably the best game ever made, it's just that simple, as i grown up with it, i really realised that this game truly offers something no other game has or will ever offer. It's hard to put my finger on it but it's just the best game ever made.

Answer: it isn't. It started implementing various "age is just a number; choose your gender; maps are an oppressed minority" changes, nobody asked for those and people weren't asked to vote on it. And thus, people started leaving it on mass. I myself cancelled my subscription and did not return, and will never return. Zero tolerance to woke nonsense in gaming.

I understand why OSRS is so popular. It's just not for me.
I keep coming back every few years for a few days but it just never sticks.

I don't care how popular it is I just enjoy I can do whatever I want and it doesn't force me to do quests

it's a perfect simulation of how we can run our countries! That's why.

OSRS is the best MMO of all time, and it’s not even close.
