I would think that the sorts of coders that are going to be most in demand in the near future would be people who have some background knowledge in algo development & some knowledge in the higher mathematics required to develop quantum information network logic and qCalc information processing/boot level embedded hardware encoding & comm apps for bleeding edge stuff. I agree with you in that AI needs to be integrated in most people's lives in some way, programmer or not.

Hi Tiff!
I'm learning to code right now, but I'm in my last semester of college for a social science and a psychology degree. After being a dual major, I can't do college more right now. I'm learning from free or inexpensive resources right now, and considering college again in the future if I find it to be necessary. I've been so discouraged, especially hearing so many people talking about how it's impossible to break into the market without a CS degree or something similar. This gave me a bit of hope that my skills from the degrees I'm already finishing will give me a small push when breaking into the tech industry. I have SOO much to learn still, but I feel a bit better now. Thank you!

Tools like chatGPT will platou at some point as all tech does. However, we still don't know where will this go. Will you be able just to say "I have a $200 budget, find me reliable hosting, domain registar and setup a WordPress website with eCommerce platform and a payment gateway. Oh yes, and throw in some fancy design while you are at it".
I will continue developing my coding skills and using AI as a helpful tool, the more complicated the code becomes the less effective the AI is.
And final thought, maybe future job position is: AI Prompt Engineer.

Would be cool to talk about what types of engineers are more or less at risk. FE vs BE vs DevOps vs CyberSecurity vs Gaming vs Machine Learning etc. I think web development is going to be one of the quicker to head toward mostly automated (not now but 5 to 10 years maybe). You’ll always need a competent human element to put out fires though.

it's still important to code, especially when you are addicted like me there is no stopping. And yeah, chat GTP can do things better but the fact that you can't do smth and it can is so sad at one hand. So is never a bad idea to keep learning :) :P

I was listening to a podcast last weekend. I think it was an interview with a Y Combinator guest and he said coding jobs will be a lot fewer in 5 years.

I was right though about UX design's short demand when I quit doing it in 2018. Now, I'm hearing lots of UX designers being unhappy as no one seems to understand it. It's the sorriest profession because no one really thinks design offers a solution; people just view it as a way to make websites and apps look pretty. I could never come back to doing it and fighting for it. Not when managers want conversions right away.

When I quit, though, I switched to writing and coding. I didn't anticipate how Chatgpt could be that good at writing. Writing jobs, especially copywriting, are finished.

So I'm left with coding, although it's one thing that I have not excelled at compared to my previous incarnations.

Even if this generative AI systems don't live up to the promise as a job killer, though, I think the perception would override reality -- anything.
It would be like how an older person would say, '"My nephew can fix that!" People will assume coding is an easy job and just low ball coders.
That will mean the profession has been commoditized and employers wouldn't think highly of it. If something gets commoditized, it will likely lose its value.

Let's see in few months when the new Chatgpt is released or Bard comes up with a better version. I heard what we got was a safe test; the next one will be more advanced.
I won't be surprised. It's an arm race now between Microsoft, Google and this week, Meta announced it'll be doing generative AI too. There's a quiet war going on with all these tech companies. And because there will be no regulations (as it plays catch up to technology), what they come up will have a tremendous impact.

I remember a time in the early days of Tech where "let me Google that for you" was literally what I did in the team . Back then it took specific know how to get the best, and most accurate results, and they were only too happy to have someone else stay close to the detail ... fast forward to today and things like ChatGPT should be viewed in a similar light, after all - the Answers you Get are only as Good as the Questions YOU ask.

AI won’t take over. We still need maintainers. At the most QA jobs and Tester jobs will become more prevalent, while programming and software engineering jobs dealing with precise systems will be the ones that remain majority hands on.

As long as computers exist and machines are using ones and zeros, there has to be people who know how to code. That's like saying we don't need mechanics just cause newer more robust cars exist.
