This ONE thing is holding Vintage Story back

I loved the scene where Vintage Story was a car and it exploded. 😁

Its worth noting the game is still in pre release/beta, there isnt much marketing because at this point they want players very into the niche that will find it not players who are like oh this looks cool ill give it a shot because those players will be bothered by the incomplete nature of it and have negative, likely non constructive reviews that could have negative effects even when the game is done, advertiving an unfinished game could lead to by time it is done its full of bad reviews detering people from buying it

100% agree! Game is a masterpiece in survival games and I found it by complete accident!

I only learned of its existence from FinalforEach's minecraft remake video. He was discussing the artstyle for his game and brought up both Minecraft and Vintage Story, and I thought "wtf is vintage story?"

Vintage Story looks like a hidden gem for sure. I would love to see more magical/alchemical/exoteric things... more monsters and things like that. But it looks so nice!!!

There's a psychology element that's rather interesting.

Since the game is harder to acquire, it's also easier to like it more.

This has been observed more and more by me, both in hindsight, and in others' experiences.
For example, playing a retro game on original hardware is going to see you getting into it more than on say, a PC via emulator. You have such an easy time even switching games that there's no downside to doing it, mentally.

Going through effort to achieve a reward is going to stick in your head much more strongly than the time you clicked load rom.

This is all to say that for those who do make the plunge and buy this through the storefront, it's actually beneficial that it was more difficult to do so.

On the flip side, people who don't have the patience to work out buying it on another storefront probably don't have the patience to get far in the game either, and are better off playing something a little simpler.


I'm sure eventually it will go to steam and epic games, but when it does it's going to be a helluva lot more feature complete. This will also help since it will release on it's strongest possible first Impression.
I have no doubt it will do well, when it is ready to do so.

The other reason most people dont do much with it even when they see it is that its to people who know little about it a minecraft clone. What does the game do so different that minecraft cant do in one way or another basically lol.

Something has to make it stand out more if you want more traction for it but honestly i think a niche small group of enjoyers is better than a large group of people trying to hard to break from the original game with 90 mods to compensate for its basic gameplay.

It is also quite expensive.

This is a non-problem.
If you don't know VS exists you didn't look for Minecraft alternatives or aren't even interested in indi games.
If the purchasing process is too difficult for you the game is probably too difficult for you anyway.
In a way the obscurity of the game prevents the influx of tourists who'd either derail the vision or put the game down when they realize they can't just craft a pot in the crafting grid. This is consumer protection.

The last major update kind of broke the game on some servers. I'm even having issues staying connected on a server I love to play.

What people don't realize about Vintage is that it is easy to add mods to. It now has support for LAN. It's always being worked on. It is a fantastic early access game, but I am afraid to play it because of what the next major update may do to my work.

I think a good reason as to why there's no sponsorships and adverts is because the devs are less pressured and want to take their time. I don't think their ideal path is "mainstream success". When they advertise it or put it on steam a whole lot of other pressure would come on top of them along with many other demands from more people. Thus making the production of updates more difficult and stressful for the devs. I personally have some experience in the discord server and I think they're great people. They're not that big of a team. They also specifically point out the game does not have anything paid in it other than the asking price. Which is definitely worth it. Think about it. If they put it on steam they're going to have to demand more money because Valve takes a cut.

The only real issue here which I completely agree with you about is the way you have to buy the game. The website ui is not the greatest and gives you a bunch of hoops to buy the game. I've told my sister and her boyfriend about this game and got both of them to buy it. But buying it was quite frustrating to say the least.

Paulsoresjr did a letsplay of it years ago and that's what brought it to me. Ever since I've loved it. I do hope they put it on Steam though at some point. But that would come with the cost of more people coming to it and demanding things to change or be dumbed down which will ruin the whole formula of the game.

I learned about vintage story because of some guy who made a comment on a minecraft video. The comment had no likes, but I was bored enough to just look up the game. It's super fun

You make great points. But I think the devs have some kinda "ideological" opposition to "selling out."

I bought the game 3 weeks ago and buying it was pretty easy. Just made an account, bought the game, got an email with the code and download info and way playing in 15 mins.

Apparently, that is by design.

The devs don't want the game to blow up until they feel it is a good competitor for Minecraft -- they said they are only about 10% of the way there

It could wind up like Baldurs Gate 3 and become popular once it's officially released.

Man check out Kurazarrh and PrivateLime channels, they making VS videos still and i think they do awesome adv for the game.

steam refunding policy is a blessing. If I don't like the game or it runs poorly I can cancel my purchase after like 1h of gameplay. On the other platforms I don't have that option. The devs of vintage story said that they don't agree with that system of refunds, which for me seems very suspicious. I'm afraid the game is not good enough and the devs are trying to hide it

As someone who purchased Vintage Story because of Secret Foxfire’s video, I absolutely adore this game and I wish it was more popular.

Ive known about it for years, i found it on a subreddit for terrafirmacraft as an option instead of modded minecraft, best game with so many mods, im waiting for a more stable release version w more mods available and updated to do another go

Some bro who's been making his own Minecraft remake (FinalForEach) showcased some comments he got in one video and one of them mentioned Vintage Story. Seeing as I had recently gotten into Minecraft Better Than Wolves and Better Than Adventure, I thought this may be some interesting modpack. Googled it and the rest is history.

I found the game through Private Lime, he had an Artic challenge series running recently.

I saw the same video and had the same feeling of a lack of diverse content, I'm glad someone with more reach said something about it

Vintage was originally a mod for Minecraft i believe then the developers decided to port and recreate the mod into its own engine and its own game

To be fair about the video stuff minecraft started out the same way lets plays and mod showcases once vs hits steam and other platforms itll take off for sure

its only the mod obsessed that care about the community getting bigger, so they dont have to make all the mods themselves lol. none of this was about crowd funding for game improvements, so dont even try n say that im wrong

Also someone made a minecraft modpack called “Terrafirmacraft” and they’re the exact same fucking thing. I don’t know which came first, I figured out about the game because I wanted to play terrafirmacraft with a friend and he showed me vintage

The fact this game is not on steam is the sole reason I don't play it

WorthABuy reviewed the game 2 years ago. That's when and why I bought it. It's not that there has been no publicity on the game whatsoever. But it's a survival game with a very realistic appoach: most people don't want that. They rather play Icarus where you need like 20 pieces of fur to craft a bedroll. And when you kill an animal you just get leather automatically with the fur. So you get fur and leather. Makes sense, right?

I hope the vintage story will be on Steam!!
