Solar panels plus farming? Agrivoltaics explained. Could combining solar panels plus farming be a viable solution to the growing demand for food production and energy demand? Let’s take a closer look at electrifying our crops (not literally electrifying crops) … well, adding solar to our farm land as well as some of the side benefits and challenges it creates.

How in hell do they get plants to grow without Photosynthesis? I can't grow shade grass under my 2 trees?

I wouldn't say "everywhere" that would lead to ma dates that would harm agriculture in some areas... while I other areas it would be ideal. Especially considering the crop, I'd say, any dual use land would make sense to the farmer selling the energy, the energy provider leasing the land, the energy producer, and the food producer. It seems to me, that in only specific areas, with specific crops would mutually benefit. But ultimately it seems like a net gain to the area grid for those locations. The way I see it.. the farmer has the most important part. The space and land. Then the energy provider. If they pay for the PVC as an investment... (and this is key) there is not some bad language in the agreement between the farmer and energy provider) then they can sell that energy and expect an ROI. while paying the farmer for the use of his land. In order for this relationship to mutually work.. there must be an out clause for both parties during doughty, freeze, or other acts of God.

This is a good idea for areas with high sun exposure and generally low crop growth like areas of Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas. The solar cells can protect plants from too much sun, while providing the energy for water distribution, and local communities. It might be possible to draw in sea water and make fresh water for deserts with solar evaporation. Solar evaporation could lead to aquaponics or hydroponics. We should be preparing for droughts, and crop loss due to climate change. We won’t need an electric car if we have no food.

What makes a system meet the definition of green ? 1ST It must make more power than was used to pull it out of the ground refine it melt it mold it machine it deliver install maintain then remove ship and 100% recycle it. ONLY hydro lasts long enough to meet the level. And even then there are no dams running three turbine halls it has been made

Ending animal agriculture will allow 75% of agricultural land to be restored to wilderness. We already produce enough crops to feed more than 20 billion. The scarcity of staples faced by the world's poor is entirely due to the use of global crop production for animal feed. There is no shortage of land or food. There is a shortage of conscience and integrity.

What about throwing panels in the parts of the land where center pivot sprinklers don't reach?
Even if only a couple percent of farm land could be used this way it would be enough for the whole USA.

Although I did not know the concept existed I imagined it and went searching for just this idea. I searched ‘can you grow under solar panels?’ and was VERY PLEASED to find this video on agrivoltaics!!!! Thank you for this beautifully explained video. We are building a home in Jamaica and I was saddened by the builder’s plan to create a solar park which would use up so much of the precious land space (a slope that has to be terraced) that I had plans to create garden spaces. I wish you were closer to Jamaica so I could actually see the agrivoltaics in person. Thanks again for this video!

Some of the info in this video is VERY wrong! How can you say the Netherlands is "the second largest food exporter in the world"???? They're on par with a lot of African countries in terms of not even being close to food self sufficient! They export high VALUE in a tiny handful of vegetables, with extremely low tonnage of them! That's beyond ridiculous to claim they are the world's second largest food exporters! Absolutely absurd!

I'm a bit late to the discussion but why don't they just combine reforestation with agrivoltaics? If one of the main issues people have with solar panels is that they don't want to physically see them in their backyard, they could just get a large area and plant the border up to a certain point with short-growing fruit trees. The border could be a small strip orchard that blocks the physical view of the solar panels from the street or someone's backyard. Under the trees, they could raise a small animal that will defecate and help promote plant growth while simultaneously eating pests. Then on the inner layer of the land, they could have solar panels with plants growing under them. Honestly, the combination of trees helping to reduce soil erosion, the animals eating pests and defecating and providing natural fertilizer, the solar panels providing energy gain, the plants being protected from the harsh sun and hail, the proven water use reduction in the hot months, and the money from the fruit trees, crops under the panels, meat from the animals, and eggs (if chickens were chosen for this experiment) would provide a pretty steady cash flow. Also, if they wanted to be really, really fancy with it they could have those solar panels that move around and adjust the height so that farmers can reorient them during times there was less sunlight to increase the amount of sunlight the plants are receiving during wet cloudy months. Or if you wanted to be less fancy with it, you could just hook up grow lights underneath the panels and turn them on and off as necessary. It would be kind of expensive to do this, but I think it's an idea that's at the very least worth experimenting with.

Vertical Solar Panels inside a Transparent Tower could track the sun from sunrise to sunset. Low cost flexible vertical solar panels suspended inside Transparent Towers could rotate and track the sun. This system would use a minimal area of land and could be installed in urban areas.

Great ideas... I would like to extend these Ideas into what I call Linear cities... take the Saudi's Idea in the desert with their ambitious 750km Towering modern city... this seams odd shaped... I would challenge you to connect all of the Americas in a linear city's except the challenge is to keep it above the ground to allow nature to pass under with minimal interference. Wing shaped to allow natural air flow... within it would be the width of about the length of a football field wide and 60ft high supported by underground concrete water storage tanks as footings for the above city to provide a supply of cleaned potable water... which can supply millions. Within a practical and efficient vertical housing units... surrounded within by fields of crops, local edible plant and smaller animals like goats and sheep... poultry... vertical farming could allow for extra growing areas (for example; rice production descending plateaued fields), Fruit trees, and local exotic plants could also be grown inside if proven marketable then useful to cultivate/export. This one is for Elon Musk... why not reach higher speeds of commuting by using a hanged rail system, that merely holds the wings between polarized tracks that have the same Pos. or Neg. charge as the wings holding a fuselage If both wings are polarized opposite then perhaps these tethered flying winged planes could cruise at rapid speeds tucked up and under this wing protected from weather and wind, powered solely through field generation . Linear urbanization could also revolutionize the delivery industry if every one lives in or near there parcels need only be sent by tubes (Elon Musk, navel ships, and others using vacuumed tubes), that will stop at your residence/droned outside the city... the capsule can then be reused... great time to introduce recycling like milk in returnable glass bottles... protective packaging, boxes and returnable containers could be returned to whence they came, lets force manufactures to design reusable packaging. Getting the continent linked together could bring the Americas into a sustainable prosperous future...
Where to start... existing highways could provide mutual benefits as the location and easy access to construction crews, materials... eventually lowering the footprint of the road by providing readily available electrics for future electric vehicles and systems to maintain them... this continuous wing will incorporate the most advanced solar and wind generation technology coupled with water storage batteries systems that raises water from the underwater fresh water storage tanks up into above Water Battery Storage Tanks during the day then returned to the below storage tanks generating power at night... might as well use this system to heat or cool the environment, provide water to all the fauna including ourselves... bike paths the whole way, high speed rails means high speed ambulances, Med bed equipped, Fire control systems... dry toilet systems and compostable gathering... water being readily available fisheries and water sports could be incorporated where feasible... say the desert... as we collect more and more fresh water it can be re-distributed to drier areas until the whole system is integrated; water from areas of abundance to dry areas providing solar power, steam power, etc. in return.
Lots of potential folks... no more homelessness!!!! Hope some one sees this ELON, DONALD, Jordan P., someone?

I definitely like this concept and will be going this route once I get my acreage, no matter what others around me say about it….
Basically my land, so I should be able to do what I want. Granted I will attempt to check it out via the authorities but it the long run it doesn’t matter.
Besides, I won’t be going full scale like a large farmer would be. Probably set aside one acre for it since that is what I had planned to do for my various gardens.
A traditional solar set up will be going on my roof or elsewhere on the acreage.

I compare solar with magma energy, as opposed to comparing solar with fossil fuels. I don't want to be negative, but I argue we need a massive over-abundance of clean Magma Energy/ electrical power/ hydrogen fuel to secure the future. Consequently, I must point out agrivoltaics is not an ideal solution. It's easier to use temporary polytunnels to shade crops. Similarly, Magma Energy/ electricity/ hydrogen is a better way to produce energy.
In lieu of the ideal, it's a clever compromise, and I've no doubt synergies exist. But the scale of the energy required to power civilisations into the future cannot realistically be produced from solar agrivoltaics. Solar can mitigate part of increasing fossil fuel emissions - as energy demand grows 50% over the next 30 years, according to IEA projections.
If instead, over that same time period, we developed Magma Energy; given abundant clean energy to spend, agriculture could become far more sustainable and productive than agrivoltaics allows. Indeed, the environmental footprint of agriculture could become one of resisting desertification and the restoration of nature.
