I think trelawny is, one of the strange man form. A lots of back story pointing at him how he always show up wherever Dutch and gang goes. Remember when Hosea and Dutch tell a Story how they met Trelawny in the middle Of NOWHERE, but he cant remember. And then they met again in some place where the getting some suplies. Pretty much like wherever the gang goes. Trelawny always show up like Watching them.
And then Before the Gang Broke apart he say goodbye to arthur. And he said 'See you soon' , I'll be back. And John Said He has a familiar face. John might not remember much about trelawny because there is not much encounter between the two in When arthur is alive. But still John still kinda remember his face..

Rather to be the strange man, i am more convinced that he is the actual FIRST RAT before micah. Many sign that we don't talk much about but more obvious proof among the other suspect. Like he is literally the broadest roamer compared to the other members. He's been in places that other members possibly haven't been yet, and those places are not known clearly yet. The places could be suspicious. He claimed that he was from ny but it isn't clearly confirmed.

Also, the first encounter with pinkerton after the blackwater incident was after he came back to the gang, bringing some information about sean being captured. And about the information, it is quite easy even for him to get that. It can be suspected that there could be sorta "collateral engagement" to get that information.

And the most obvious proof, before chapter 6, is that he is the ONLY camp member who is confirmed easily spoiling secrets. It is confirmed in the chat between charles and arthur in the mission where we save him from bounty hunter in the braithwaite manor.
