They failed because they didn't make sure the human "Wrench Monkey" engineer didn't have an AI embedded in her body. Now the technophobic religious caste is going to realize exactly what amount of damage a monkey with a wrench can do.

Most of Humanity are descended from monkeys(Rhesus factor), 20% do not have the Rhesus factor, how is that possible? Well if you want to be a monkey that's fine.
