An interesting yet slightly biased video. How can you say it makes sense that greek islands cannot use their exclusive zones which would mean parts of turkey would be in their territory - which is ubsurd as this is accounted for by treaty - yet not say something similar with illegally occupied north Cyprus. You do gloss over that UN declaration. What would be better to say is, turkey did t sign o to the UN convention so they feel they don't need to abide by it.

To go further, 'reasonable' asks are opinion. If Turkey could make claims to islands, it would. But it can't, so it says shared space. Yet UN and near globally recognized convention says otherwise. Yes the Italians did cede the Dodecanese with lack of militarization, but that's between Italy and Greece. These were ceded post ww2 and at turkey's opposition. So which is it? Greece has to abide by a treaty between it and Italy, or turkey needs to abide by a treaty signed by the rest of the world excluding turkey? You can't have both ways. Very biased approach to this issue.

The truth is simple and that is why it is hard to accept. 1) Turkey does not accept Greece’s right to territorial waters expansion to 12 miles for the Aegean Islands. 2) Turkey does not recognize an EEZ for the islands. Both claims are against the international maritime law. Greece is the only country in the world that has not exercised the right of expanding the territorial waters around the islands from 6 miles (currently) to 12 miles, as she is entitled to by UNCLOS. The reason for that is the constant threat, known as casus belli, by Turkey that if that happens, war will be declared by Turkey against Greece. “Casus belli” has been officially voted by the Turkish parliament in the 90s and obliges anyone in charge to declare war if Greece exercises her legal right to expand the territorial waters. Casus belli was based on the turkish claim that UNCLOS (which Turkey has refused to sign) cannot be exercised for islands, only for the mainland, and that the Aegean sea has “special characteristics” as the Greek islands are so close to each other and some of them so close to the Asia Minir turkish territory that expansion would not allow any safe passage for turkish ships. Another claim is that islands such as Castellorizo are too far away from the mainland and in that way they do jot have the same rights over territorial waters and EEZ as the mainland. This is an irrational and totally made up claim for several reasons, with the main one being that commercial ships and even military vessels at certain instances can safely cross through territorial waters as per the international maritime law. Similar arrangements are in place for islands such as the Canary Islands in the Northwestern African coast, which belong to Spain. The reasons for the turkish claims laid above is that technically Turkey is not happy about the current power that the Lausanne treaty has granted her, which limits her influence in the Aegean and is constantly trying to promote unlawful claims so that she can get more influence in that space.

Without intervention from third parties, Greece would lose any war outright. Greece is completely dependant on all its weapons systems and most its munitions to other countries. Turkey manufactures most if not all its weapons platforms and all the munitions and support equipment it needs. Especially when it comes to Drones, Turkey will completely obliterate Greece within the first 24 hours of open all out war. Having said this, the worst thing that will ever happen between these two countries are some isolated border skirmishes at worst.

What parts of Turkey would be within Greek territorial waters at 12 nm?? Islands along the Turkish coast are equidistant. Turkey refuses to recognized the UNCLOS Treaty that the rest of the world recognizes, including islands having their own EEZ. If those islands were Turkish, you better believe the Turks would suddenly be supporting the treaty, trust. This video treats it as if it it a mutual dispute; it isn't. It's a one-sided dispute where Turkey is challenging Greek sovereignty, period.

For thousands of years?? Turks only arrived in Anatolia in 1071 CE; that's less that 1,000 years. Greeks have been in the region 3,500 years. Get it right; Turkey is an interloper.

As an American I say Greece is in the right. All of those Islands are Greek speaking and thus Turkey cannot claim them. Were I president of the US I would ask Congress to give Greece an unconditional guarantee of their territorial integrity. Should any Turkish plane, missile or boot cross that border the consequences would be thus: Istanbul would re-become Constantinople and the Kurds would get their long overdue independence. This will force Turkey into the Russians sphere but that will happen eventually anyways. Why sacrifice a reliable European ally to appease an unreliable ally who could stab us in the back.

What are you talking about? Crete is a Greek island and the waters around it are Greek. Even a child knows that. Greece does not want to expand its waters. All nations have 12 miles around their lands except Greece. Greece has no claims in Turkish waters or land and has never been an aggressor in the past couple of thousands of years, while Turkey has been threatening Greece constantly and has been flying over Greek islands and waters with jet fighters daily. This is not a conflict between two nations. Here we have Turkey trying to get Greek oil in Greek waters. Again 12 miles is the standard maritime law, all nations have that. Turkey has constantly been bullying Greece.

Kind of false equivalence to show that Greece had ruled it for thousands of years and the Persians ruled it and then the Ottomans as if the Ottomans are the successors of the Persians. The Persians and Ottomans were at odds for years and some of the greatest wars between them were fought for centuries based on religious differences that continue on to this day. The Persians and the Greeks rule were contemporaries while the Ottomans came much, much later and are very different from the Persians.

Not sure I follow all of this nice video and not too bias but. If islands don’t count to sea territory then the UK and many nations have no sea rights?! Also it’s hard to point fingers at Greece when you look at Izmir Cyprus and other such atrocities! The amount of times Turkish planes or ships have entered Greek territory in hostile ways even over mainland Greece is unbelievable! So I’d say as a Greek if you look at it no turkey has no rights or morals considering the salujek Turks who created the Ottoman Empire and who erduwan proclaims to be were more Asian and mongol like than the peoples of Anatolia! So if anything most of Turkeys ethically are more similar with Greeks.
But saying all that I don’t wish war this is all the leaders of the countries and I for one have been to Turkey and like the normal people in places like marmaris.

Ok,I now that it's difficult for someone outside this conflict to understand the real reasons of the Turkish agression. But come on!At the Inia crisis Turkish commandos shot down a Greek helicopter. The 1987 crisis was about the Turkish navy that entered hellenic waters.
The 2020 crisis was a out their navy again. The air force of Turkey enters every day the Greek aerospace.Turkish coast patrolling ships try to shrink the Greek ones. And the Greek military uses superior tactics weapons and has larger reserves.
Have a nice day.

In international maritime law, the continental shelf is not calculated from the islands. As the name suggests, it is calculated from the continent, that is, the mainland. Greece's thesis is wrong. You can find out with a very simple research. The Cyprus issue, on the other hand, is another dimension. While two peoples lived happily on the island in the past, the Greek terrorist organization Eoka massacred the Turks on the island. He organized an operation on the island in Turkey and secured the lives of the Turks in Cyprus.

Analysing the outcome of war and not even mentioning the Rafale and upgraded f16 that Greece has makes the analysis inaccurate.

Also, land battles won’t play out this way. Greece would never invade Turkey - that’s suicidal.

You also forgot that France has a military pact with Greece and guarantees that will not only send equipment but soldiers if Greece is attacked.

Also Turkey may get help from Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Qatar which may influence the outcome.
