just buy a cheap 4gb ram stick to add to a laptop. it costs like 10 bucks, but gives you significant performance bump

I just bought a pretty expensive laptop and paid $$$ it has top processor i9 and rtx and 16gb of ram. I just found out the sad news that my model has the ram has 8gb (3200), and not 16gb as I thought, soldered to the board and 8gb installed on the only one "falsely allowed to upgrade" slot. So I paid the $$$ thinking about having a high end machine that will last for years to come with just upgrading more ram in the future (I thought!). But the soldered 8gb of ram makes it impossible to go over 16gb if I want to use the advantage of dual channel. I still have 15 days to return the machine. Would you suggest me to return it? or you think it's fine to add a 16+8? resulting in 8+8 in dual channel and the remaining 8gb in single channel? I see some very demanding games are already requiring 16gb ram! I need an opinion of someone with good knowledge. Please help!

So from this we can say if u r running max settings it’s not really worth it and tbh in my legion 5 laptop I’d rather have 8% less fps with less thermals, good trade off I think.

Hi Jarrod, it's been two years! Do you think you may do an update video with a slightly different approach (i.e., unbalanced dual channel's performance)? I think A LOT of top laptops (G14, G15, legion 7 slim, M16, etc) we saw this and last year have one soldered RAM, meaning the upgrade path will be, say 8GB soldered + 32GB sodimm. Would love to know the performance of an unbalanced dual channel. Besides, I don't think anyone has posted anything like this yet!! If anyone can do it, it's you!

If a laptop has two RAM slots and Initially there is 8GB RAM in one of the slots and the other one is empty. So now if one 8GB RAM is added to the empty slot keeping the other slot as it is, then will the laptop become dual channel RAM laptop?

The gpu is always underutilized using 30-50% of its power. Do you think it’s because of single channel 8gb of ram? Will 2x8 stick of ram increase performance a lot?
