Hello and thanks for the very informative reviews you make:)
I just bought a Seiko Sumo Chronograph and I am planning to change the bezel insert. Since you have both, the regular and the Solar Chrono Sumo, can you tell me if the bezels have the same dimensions?

Fine vid Jody. Thanks…..PS.. What is the deal with the 24 hour dial Jody? BTW Fine review. The useless 24 hr dial for the sake of having a tri-compax Chrono is maddening. A VERY USEFUL 12 hr. totalizer could easily replace the “Look at me! I’m a pilot” dial….just go look outside….big yellow ball up there? It’s what some call daytime! For those of us that actually fly airplanes…..uh…….pretty easy to tell night from day……….at least for me……..helps to know when I will bingo fuel. Thanks!

Like both quartz and mechanical. Got a few solar. Tha Black Arnie, a Seiko Premier and a cheap Pulsar. Would pick the three-hand auto between these two as I find chronographs too busy looking and just like a nice clean face.

For ten years I’ve worn a solar-powered radio-sync Citizen, H145 movement if you can call it a movement. No battery, almost always changes to and from DST even though I’m in a fringe reception area for WWVB (U. S. time signal station in Colorado). US$300 in 2012 though $400 list. Almost always within a second of official time. Sapphire crystal. Fairly easy to change to a different time zone. Syncs to German station when I’m in Europe.

It’s all about practicality. Recently I’ve started buying other watches for fun, but nothing I own is better. I got a Swiss watch with thermocompensated quartz PreciDrive innards, and so far it’s keeping within its rated ten seconds a year — but I still have to adjust date and time manually. I’m lazy! With an automatic I’d have more worries…

Cheers mate, love you’re channel.
P.S. I own few quartz watches but for Seiko Sumo a perfect diver under 1000$ this movement don’t stand a chance against automatic.

I have a 70’s vintage Seiko Hybrid:Analog dial with a function screen on top…Chrono, Alarm, Day/Date, Digital Time Display. The screen is very weak but she still runs. And a Seiko tri-compax super chronograph from the mid 80’s. Runs like a dream and beyond belief accurate….37 years later. Quartz rocks !! Great review as always Jody. But man, that worthless 24 hour sub dial…..just as easy to put in a 12 hour totalizer. I’ve seen those for <$180.00 USD.

This is the first time I watch a video from this gentleman, and I am kind of lost. He is doing a comparison between a true divers watch- the auto- against a quartz watch- the Chrono. A chronograph function in a watch that is also a divers is kind of incomplete without the Tachymeter or telemeter scales. And if there is going to be a comparison, both models have to serve strictly the same function- mechanical Three hand diver VS Quartz Three hand Diver, or Quartz Chrono VS Mechanical Chrono(Manual or Automatic). I really don't get it, and I have hundreds of watches of all sorts and brands, from Omega, Rolex, AP, VC, Seiko, Pagani Design, Citizen, Casio, Timex, all the way to Jaeger LeCoultre, Breguet and Swatch, plus many other brands, and never found a comparison like this one. That is MHO. I think I will pass it. The only thing I am giving the reason to this gentleman is that cropped luminous marker in the chrono, is an atrocity, I would not get that watch just because of that. But the mechanical SUMO watch is gorgeous in its execution and clarity.

While a quartz movement just isn't the same, if it's solar powered I've no complaints, I've bought the watch, I shouldn't be paying to keep it running! I'm not a fan of chronographs so even for the very reasonable price, I wouldn't wear it. Not because it's quartz but because some idiot vandalised a perfectly good case. Of course that's my opinion and thank goodness everyone has their own.

Eh. I bought a quartz solar diver last week, and when it arrived it just didn't feel the same, even with the simple three-hand dial. I immediately missed the gentle sweep of the second hand. So, I went back for the mechanical sumo.

I'm sure the quartz will still get some wear, but in hindsight I would have just gone straight for the mechanical instead.

After getting into watches I really fell in love with the mechanicals, and how could you not? But after spending some time wearing mechanical watches, I realized that I absolutely hate having to set the time every few days because they're either fast or slow. I wear a watch because I want it to tell me the time. What's the point if I have to refer to my phone every time I want to wear one? So I fell back in love with quartz, and especially solar quartz. They're always on, they are incredibly accurate, you can just slap one on the wrist and you'll know it's good. Now I only wear a mechanical watch as a gimmick.

I actually strongly prefer quartz, and especially solar over automatics. I want my watch to work out of the box, and not constantly have to readjust the time and wind the watch when I decide to wear something else for a couple of days. Sure, automatics look beautiful with the smooth second hand, and the mechanical work inside, but I prefer my watch to be practical.
Quartz runs nonstop for three years on a battery, and solar pretty much runs forever.

Who cares if it’s quartz or auto. I buy watches as a tool. I have both auto and quartz including solar. Now if I was planning on spending 20k on a watch it will be auto. Theoretically that watch could last 100 years with maintenance and parts. I don’t see a quartz lasting that long. Resale on a quartz is normally low. But if you take heirloom and money out of the equation. Quartz is awesome. It’s easy. Normally less expensive. Can potentially last half a lifetime depending on the watch. It’s far more accurate. And simply grab and go because it holds it time for more than a day or two. It’s your money. Buy what you like and don’t worry about the snobs.

Good to hear that Seiko kept the 45 mm size and did not lighten the watch, as is the case with too many quartz watches which have spring wound siblings. A lighter watch is ok for a female, but a man wants to know that he has a piece of machinery on his wrist. Also, please don’t say “mechanical” versus “quartz”. All quartz analog watches are mechanical. Just like a spring wound watch, a quartz analog has gears which make up a drivetrain and is often jeweled, but not always. The big difference between the two is where the power comes from to turn the wheels, and thus the hands. A spring-wound watch uses just that…a “spring” to provide power to the drive train, regulated by a second spring at the other end of the drive train. A quartz watch uses a small electric motor to provide power to the drive train. The motor speed is regulated by a quartz crystal. This is why I have no problem with quartz analog. Just like it’s spring-wound cousin it is still a machine on my wrist that gives me great satisfaction.
That being said, I wish the date had been placed inside the sub-dial at the 3 o’clock position. I am not a big fan of the date between the four and five o’clock. That is hard to read.
