Manjaro Arm Is Awesome! OS Overview and Install Guide - Raspberry Pi ODROID Pine64 Radxa

Hey, nice presentation, but NEVER EVER run pacman -Sy packagename on arch based linux distributions. If you want to install a package, use pacman -S packagename (without the y option).
The reason is as follows, arch based distibutions are what is called "rolling release", which means that there are no fixed releases. Once a new version of a program is released, it is (after a few rounds of testing) added to the manjaro/arch software repository. If you run the y option, the package information on your machine updates, and it is aware of newer programs. Now if you install a new program (for example gimp) with pacman -Sy gimp, it first updates your local package information and installs the newest gimp version. While that sounds great, it does not check, if the rest of your programs are compatible with this newest version of gimp. So depending on the program you installed, it might lead to system instabilities.
If you install via pacman -S gimp, it tries to install the latest version of gimp your machine knows about. It might be possible, that this version is not the newest version and maybe not even available anymore on the manjaro/arch repositories. While this seems bad, you are prevented to install incompatible software. Once that occurs, you can simply do a complete system upgrade with "pacman -Syu", which updates your local package information and install all updates of already installed software. Now you can install your gimp or whatever with "pacman -S gimp". Your system knows the latest version, and your gimp version is compatible to all of your installed software.

Be nice if Microsoft did a chopped down ARM friend Windows OS.. install and install.. Linux based OS are good but all these scripts and command windows is a put off for an average user. Ah well maybe one day.

Shitty overview. How is it any better than Raspbian? Or other linux ports to ARM? It looks neat, but it can be done using themes if you use KDE or Gnome desktop environment. I've heard it's good for playing windows games, but on x86 processors.

This is really cool. I've used Manjaro for a few months and really enjoyed it, although as a content creator I found it had too many instabilities for my liking and froze/crashed tools I used too often. It's a great distro otherwise, especially running on an SBC

Arch is available on a huge number of arm SoC/SoM, I've had arch running on a mono core 400 Mhz ARM SoM for an embedded project. Also been running Arch on my Think Pads for years now it's def. worth the learning curve considering how much easier everything becomes down the line thanks to AUR. Also, Ubuntu is just Debian for lazy/oh shiny!-people, just like Manjaro is for Arch :D

Is the Raspberry Pi4 good for CCTV surveillance ? Can you make a video of that ? How many IP camera's can i connect to this ? and is there software for that ?

Feel that Manjaro is too bleeding edge for day to day use. And I rather use vanilla Arch without GUI for servers (e.g. easier to customise/minimise and less packages to maintain/update)...

Can you set this up and run it headless? I don't have a separate keyboard and mouse.

Just a heads up, you said you would type "sudo apt-get gimp" to install GIMP, but you actually need to type "sudo apt-get install gimp" or "sudo apt install gimp"

Very interesting! Quick question. If I’m using my N2 for retro gaming only and want better performance on certain emulators, are there any benefits installing Manjaro and Retroarch on top of that distro? Or will it run worse that just installing Batocera och RetroArena?

How can I easily install OpenSCAD and Codeblocks on this? I am disabled with cognitive dysfunction. Bought a Rock64 and didn't realize i couldn't get desktop.

Why is it that I have a hard time finding anything about support/compatibility/problems for ARM on Linux but apparently Windows ARM is unusable still? Is Linux software also running slower on ARM than on x86? I wonder because I installed manjaro on my raspi many months ago and I can't remember facing any issue, I hadn't realized that it was the same architecture that was such a fiasco on Windows.

One of my wet dreams is to install Manjaro ARM in one of the new Surface Pro X.

I enjoy your reviews. You have inspired me to try many things with my collection of SBC. I just installed Manjaro arm 22.04 with Vulkan activated and branch set to testing on my Pi4 4G. I am amazed at the ease of install and today reinstalled on a ssd to try out as a permanent home PC. I wish you would do an update on this Arch distribution. I'm going to install steam now, fingers crossed.
