I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out exactly what goes on in the minds of studios and distributors when it comes to physical releases post covid. Ever since this all digital hellscape has taken over, fewer and fewer movies/shows have been released for home video.
I saw the writing on the wall long before 2019, but the moment that things changed heavily in my mind was when I went to the theaters to see Army of the Dead. High profile movie, big-name stars (Dave Bautista/Ella Purnell), Zach Snyder directing, $100M budget...and no physical release since its debut. And I just knew in my heart that movie was going to get released because of its nature. But when that never happened, I realized that if any streaming service is given distribution rights for a film, you have to pray that it will actually get released.
Just like with Don't Look Up. A movie that has every right to be released on physical media, but is stuck in digital limbo.
And it doesn't even seem as if it's because the streaming services feel like they should retain exclusivity of IP's in order to increase their membership count because many of the films that I'd love to see are properties that can't possibly be counting heavily towards their numbers because either they're two niche for anyone to notice, or they've been out so long that everyone who's wanted to see them already has and they're no longer maintaining any hold for the platform.
The Wandering Earth
Day Shift
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
Night in Paradise
Project Power
Blood Machines
Kill Boksoon
Oxygen
I Am Mother
In the Shadow of the Moon
The Tomorrow War
Extraction 1 & 2
Project Adam
Kate
Night Comes for Us
I could go on and on and on.
You mentioned Prey, but that was a very rare win for physical collectors. And even then, it seems to have only been a limited release and you can't really find it anywhere outside of the second hand market now. And in the SLIGHTEST defense of Disney, (outside of Barbarian of course), they seem to be the only ones doing more than most recently by releasing their Marvel and Star Wars properties in small bursts these days, four shows at a time, but we never know which shows they're going to release, or when. It seems like each time they release a group, they sit back and wait to see how much interest they generate. So who even knows if they'll even do another set of shows at any given time? And they're the exception with the streaming landscape, not the rule.
It's frustrating being a cinephile and a collector in the 2020's...
Killers of the Flower Moon is a excellent movie. I want a physical media copy of this.
ОтветитьThey re-released the Killers of the Flower Moon 4K without the region locking. So if you're looking for that, pick up the 4KUlt release. Picked it up and looks great!
ОтветитьI have bootleg of Barbarian Ken. I didn't like it at all
Ответить“CODA” has an Italian 4K that you can order through the Amazon UK store. I picked it up last year for under $30.
ОтветитьKen, you forgot about Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon”. It came out last November in theaters. Then, it went to streaming on Apple TV in February and has not yet gotten a physical release. True, it was a disappointing effort from Scott IMHO. I forgot which studio produced that along with Apple. It flopped theatrically.
ОтветитьI’m still thanking about watching it
ОтветитьKen, I see you conveniently forgot that the Doug Liman directed remake of “Roadhouse” that streamed on Prime Video hasn’t gotten a physical release either. Though, that never released in theaters.
ОтветитьI would be all over a fancy 4K release of the Tetris movie.
ОтветитьI think the movie Cabrini should be released by another company other than Angel Studios. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen this year.
Ответитьgood video, a lot out there we need. I really do want Saltburn, killers of the flower moon, and barbarian.
ОтветитьKaleidescape
ОтветитьI want a copy of The Empty Man. One of the last movies Fox released before Disney bought them. One of the best horror movies I've seen in a long time.
ОтветитьKen was right.
Ответить📼
ОтветитьWasn’t Saltburn an Amazon original? They haven’t been very nice to physical releases, have they?
ОтветитьWow, he actually swore. Caught me by surprise.
I want a physical release for a Netflix original film called A Whisker Away, love that film.
Other than that there is one other film I really really want on physical media. Technically this other film has been released twice on bluray. The first is an out of print bluray steelbook that goes for over $200 on places like Ebay and the second release is in a $550 collector set. I just want an affordiable option to buy the bluray, is that too much to ask for?
Has the new Hellraiser movie that came out on Hulu on physical media yet? It was released on Hulu shortly after Prey. I do not think it did.
ОтветитьCoda got a foreign 4k release.
ОтветитьDabgerous minds please
ОтветитьI feel like Saltburn will find it's way to Criterion. I hope so anyway.
ОтветитьYou forgot the most recent Texas Chain Saw film that aired on Netflix. As a collector, I want this one to own as well.
ОтветитьDutch subtiteld Bluray of Knives Out 2, Killers of the flower moon, Napoleon. Iam suprised Argylle is not already released. The movie did better then Monkey Man who is already released.
ОтветитьThank you so much for a great video Ken. Also many thanks for mentioning ARGYLLE.
ОтветитьWho wants to rewatch Saltburn? 😅
ОтветитьAt a guess stuck on a streaming site never to see the light of disc !
ОтветитьI like Apple drama. Silo, Severance. They are not out on blu ray.
ОтветитьBeen really wanting to see CODA. I don’t sub to AppleTV so holding out for a physical release. 😞
ОтветитьDefinitely waiting on Saltburn and Barbarian. Napolean is another one that needs a release.
ОтветитьStill Waiting for the Original Star Wars Release . Excluding the exceptional Blu-ray and 4k77 Unofficial Release.
And how 🤔 long ago in a Disney Basement It's be stashed to never be seen.I fear they have been destroyed???By Lucas. STANLEY KUBRICK was noted for Burning any extra footage at the time. So his movies would not be enhanced or Altered.Thats why we don't have extra footage to see it let alone be included in any current format
There was a re-issue of Killers Of The Flower Moon that is Region Free
ОтветитьSaltburn is getting a physical media release as the director confirmed the cast (minus Barry Keoghan) recorded a commentary track. It wouldn't surprise me if Criterion released it.
ОтветитьSaltburn is the worst film I've ever seen, so I'm not bothered about it not getting a release. I'd like some of the Netflix films to get a release.
ОтветитьI recently saw that Mike Flanagan’s Hush movie, which disappeared from Netflix and wasn’t available anywhere, is now up for pre-order to purchase on streaming. Comes out August 27th. Bizarre that an 8 year old movie is now available to pre-order lol
ОтветитьCant wait for Barbarian to come out.......Please let us know Ken if you hear anything about this at all......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ОтветитьI would love 4K releases of Saltburn and Barbarian! (I will even pay for an import)
ОтветитьSick is a horror/comedy I would like to see on blu ray. There is only a dvd release to my knowledge at this time.
ОтветитьGlass Onion and the Hellraiser reboot still don’t have physical releases.
ОтветитьCoda has been released in 4k in Italy, same as KOTFM
ОтветитьYour friendly neighborhood bootlegger, has plenty for sale.
ОтветитьDisney doesn't give a shit about physical media. Then they go here, you go $40 steelbooks that way too expensive. That's why Barbarian, which I haven't seen but want to, isn't on physical media.
ОтветитьHey Ken, What about the Hellraiser 2022 remake? I mean we got a disc release of Prey, why not Hellraiser. I thought it was a pretty descent remake......
ОтветитьI can’t believe Disney hasn’t released Hocus Pocus 2 on 4K and Blu-ray. The film was released almost 2 years ago
ОтветитьCODA is my favorite movie released in the 2020s, lucky for me I was able to buy it on 4K from Italy (or somewhere in Europe). I'm no horror fan so I don't even know what Barbarian is.
ОтветитьIf you pre ordered the Columbia Classics, you're dumber than K. Harris
ОтветитьKenny killers of the flower moon was repressed region free a long time ago
ОтветитьSee How They Run looks super fun and I really want that on blu for my collection, have yet to see it.
ОтветитьBeen wanting Saltburn for a while!! I’m sure it would sell ludicrous amounts!
Another one I want is I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Also Wheelman with Frank Grillo is a good one I’d buy
@MidLevelMedia What about Thirteen Lives directed by Ron Howard?
ОтветитьI got Barbarian on blue ray, it also came with a slip. You need to hunt 😉
