Its foolish to say that US got nothing. It resulted in windfall for OPEC and we al know how close US is to OPEC. Crude went over 100 and this was way back in 2003. All oil producing US allies made trillions. The shale gas industry was initiated. Corn prices hit the roof as US started to look for alternatives like biofuels.
The real headline for War is somewhere else. Why did Saddam Hussein invade Kuwait in 1992. He invaded it for the oil. His public position was that he was invading it to force Israel to leave the Palestine territory. But obviously that was not true. Saddam was losing control. Iraq's oil reserves had depleted and after a decade long War with Iran, Iraq was getting bankrupt. Saddam Hussein needed something to keep his country together or it would have disintegrated. It was suicidal decision but probably he was left with no choice.
Later on George Bush did the same. His war on Iraq was mainly to push up the prices of crude to help the US allies of the middle east to earn more from crude.
