tech- define peformance...
Me- Smooth gameplay! No stutters! Not so worried about the highest fps if it isnt smooth.

By the way I went to 32 gb of ram from 16 thanks to you guys and Im definantely happier as someone who plays the latest AAA games in ultra detail at 4k. Ive seen warzone use over 16 in mp so it does use it. Love the vid!

I probably saw this last year. And I have been saying this since sometime in the '90's. Hardware is defined by the usage. Not by what anyone else is using as PC has and will always be personal computer. For the last 10 years I've been on a 42" display and I'm an "old guy", and would get kicked because I could spot and lead a target far down range. The kick was due to someone on a small display that couldn't fathom that once a person had their ranges figured out it was easy. But from their perspective they thought I was using an aimbot. Also note that I was already doing what's called provisioning for my storage devices as I used 32G of DDR for the last 10 years as well. Consider "net code" and latencies, and if a person learns to compensate for them they can achieve a fair bit. My AMD RX 5700 still functions and serves my purpose, eventually I will upgrade. x570 Taichi R9 5900X w/ 32G 3400DDR4 still transcodes what I need to this day. ArmA 3 is wonderful with no anti-aliasing and no post processing required on my 4k Samsung. I've got some testing to do in Baldurs Gate 3 in both DX and Vulkan. I'm also seeing how Proton evolves as Win 10 Pro reaches EOL. ✌😁

Listen close, price = nothing. If you have money, you go for the actual best to secure future, if you have a budget, BUY whatever you want in your budget and DONT give a fk about what the others says.

I can assure y'all a 5900x is more than enough for BF2042 while doing whatever you want in the background.

Average CPU usage from a 5900x in BF2042 is 40% CPU usage. You aren't going to have anything in the background pushing you on up to 85%+. I don't care if you're using OBS to use your CPU for recording and streaming along with Discord and Chrome playing a YT vid or whatever.

5950x won't do it better at all.

No offense, and I mean that honestly, but comparing the 7700k to a newer higher core Ryzen isn't in the same ballpark. The 5900x is overkill for all gaming/streaming/recording needs. And that's fine.. overkill is fine if that's within your life budget.

Plus, you'll probably hit higher clockspeeds on the 5900x due to the slightly higher core load... leading to the same frametime smoothness with like 1-2 fps higher average framerates.

Also keep in mind the 5900X has a pair of cut down chiplets as opposed to the 5950X having a pair of full chiplets. If you take the time to set the affinity of the game to the primary chiplet then you’re not thrashing on the fabric as much as people are with the 5900X. This is a issue with the 7000 parts too. I would suggest either going the X800X or X950X route if you’re gaming.

Just got a 5950x for 548$.... upgrading from a x5690 Xeon. Funny thing is the xeon still destroys anything i throw at it game wise, i run a extreme overclock and it is actually consuming more power than my new 5950x will. Just a guess but i assume it will run cooler as well. My main reason for upgrading is support for windows 11 and NVME boot ability. Hobby wise i do 4k encoding although few and far between because my job keeps me busy it will be nice to have those 16 cores.

I definitely like the extra headroom of more than 8 cores for gaming. But 16 cores is definitely overkill unless you are absolutely extreme multi tasking in the background. 5900X is awesome. Just need a great bin for an awesome all core manual overclock which I can going to try now. Shame on Intel for proving only 8 strong cores maximum on anything and no more. And the rest e-waste cores which are only good at limited workloads but not good well rounded neverminded the scheduling issues in an SMP ecosystem of software for 25 years. Ryzen 9 5900X with 12 good cores is better than Intel that has 8 slightly to modestly stronger P cores than Zen 3, but dramatically weaker e-waste cores for more cores above 8. Intel has made a huge mistake by not releasing a 10 core Golden Cove Alder Lake chip and sticking to those e-waste cores with adding even more on Raptor Lake while staying on 8 strong cores. Intel is losing many enthusiast customers as such.

Just ordered a 5900x open box from a trusted source with easy return option for $315. It will push out my 5600x to my kids 1080p 240hz system. That will push out a 3600 and will then sell a 1600AF hopefully for around $80-100. Not sure how much difference a 5900x will make at my slightly above 1440p (3840x1080 at 144hz) level of pixels. Only running 6700xt. Couldn’t pass on the price and I have a lower end Ryzen to sell off now to recoup some cost.

I was lucky enough to snag a RX 6900XT in july 2021. With the new gpu I bought a Samsung Odyssey G5 34“ 165Hz display. I build the system initially in 2020 with a Ryzen 7 3700x on a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite paired with 16GB 3200MHz CL16 RAM and a RX 5700XT.

Reasonable machine. But now with the the 6900XT, I‘ve already upgraded to 32GB 3600MHz. The CPU will be next. It‘s true. If you‘re the type of guy who spends 1000€/$ on a gpu, why in the world would you skimp on the CPU budget? It just don‘t make sense. I’ve encountered several times where my frametimes where all over the place. Also, I really do HATE stutters and they do occur on my machine repeatedly. I’m not spending 2k on a machine and have to deal with stutters, absolutely unbearable. That‘s why I‘ll get the 5900X in the near future and will be done with upgrading for the next years. I hope the price will drop eventually even further with the zen 3 refresh happening or I‘ll get a Ryzen 9 from the upcoming lineup.

for serious gaming/streaming you'll be fine with 5900x/5800x and soon 5700x

Also depends on the resolution you play at and what your current GPU is. I have a 3080 Ti an a 5600X playing at 1440p. For me, I took the money I would have spent on a 5900X and bumped my GPU budget high enough to get the 3080 Ti instead of a normal 3080. I might upgrade my CPU once the new 3D CPU's are out, but so far, the 5600X is doing fine for a pure gaming rig.

I went 5900X many months ago. I originally wanted an 5950X (because I wanted the BEST), but there was virtually no benefit for me to go that route. I play 2K, didn't go 64 RAM (32 instead). I also wanted a 3080, but ended up getting a 3090. But that's just because of how the market is back then. The 3090 is basically my GPU for the next several years, so if I do an upgrade next year, my system will definitely get bumped up to 64 RAM, then I'll consider if 12 cores is sufficient or if I should jump up to 16 cores (or whatever they'll have by next year). Like you said, 5900X is more than enough for most users.

Sure the 5950X is better than the 5900X, but not a single person will notice a difference between the 2 on any games for years to come, unless of course they got a crap ton of background stuff going on, but the 24 thread chip will handle a lot before any game gives it grief.
