Why Valve Made Half Life: Alyx a VR Exclusive

Half Life: Alyx is coming! Very soon (or, perhaps, not that soon), players will be able to explore a wondrous VR version of the classic Half Life 2 world, taking on the role of Alyx Vance in a fight to save humanity.
It should go well, right? What could possibly go wrong?
When we first heard the announcement of a new Half Life game, we had three big questions: 1. Why make a Half Life game? 2. Why make it a prequel instead of simply giving the world Half Life 3? 3. Why make it a VR exclusive?
Wouldn’t you know it, a video from The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley explains every point on this list. So, we’ve paraphrased a twenty minute interview with Valve staff to try and make it a bit more accessible for you. If you’ve seen the interview you might not gain much from this video, but at least we made cutesy headcrabs. That counts for something, right?
More games from Valve are no bad thing. We’re eagerly anticipating the release of In the Valley of Gods, which will be coming…eventually. Apparently some of the Campo Santo staff got pulled to work on Half Life: Alyx, as did pretty much everyone at the studio by the end of the project.
While we’d really like to see another Portal game, we’ll take what we can get. We do notice, though, that the studio is once again avoiding giving anyone a third title game. It simply doesn’t happen.
Anyway, we offered up the possibility of doing this video to you guys in a poll, and approximately half of you said that we shouldn’t both. Ultimately, we went with our gut, making a video that we wanted to make, because we thought it’d be fun. Hopefully you won’t fault us too much; the promised “something Nintendo-y” will be coming next week so long as we find something good to talk about.
We have a habit of flying by the seat of our pants on this channel.
