Hey vertasisum! Look up an E-Coti or Jerry C it's a hybrid system that integrates thermal imaging on to a G3 NV device it's Awsome.

You should buy your producer girl some fancy night vison goggles so she can cry at the stars whenever she wants to.

Think about how scary it'd be to see someone in the military, sneaking through your house with those panoramic goggles on. 😨

This is why every American should be proud as heck, we literally develop anything we put our minds into. Let's never stop innovating!

You active NV was digital. There's Gen 1 analog NV that was also active almost exclusively--used to see it a lot. No digital lag, but huge fish eye effect and needs the active illumination. Still cool. And once you get to higher generations, it's like magic.

The thermal (infrared) cameras are also used widely in space applications e.g. the JWST, where the camera has to look into wavelengths much longer than LWIR because of Red shift of EM waves . May be Derek can do a video on those as well.

Last time I was called to military reserve they made a serious mistake.
I was guarding a weaponary bunker at night and was given an NVD.
A big mistake. Giving an astronomer a night vision device on a clear moonless night
and expecting him to point it mostly at the ground.

My eyes work differently than most people as majority see stereo optic. Example using the red/green plastic glasses to see 3D images on a 3D printed picture, seeing two different pictures giving it depth creating the illusion of a 3D image. I cannot see 3D since I see mono-optic. I control which eye I perceive images able to switch from left or right eye but can't use both at the same moment. The brain compensates depth perception, so I can still judge distance as accurate as anyone else. Now, with NVGs when I was in the military it was hard for most to RUN in a forest wearing NVGs since their depth perception is hinder by the NVGs being mono-optic. I however, had zero issue running in the forest, ducking and dodging bushes, branches and jumping over fallen tree trunks and branches. Reason why I could simply dash through obstacles is because I ALWAYS see mono-optic.

Also, went to see Avatar in 3D opening day with friends and wearing the 3D glasses (polarized?) I still wore them just so the screen didn't look fuzzy I just never saw anything in 3D.

Run that last step through a stable diffusion model and you will have near perfect results

It'd be interesting to see a version that used infrared imaging as "framing" to determine if and how much visible light is coming from something, then use that data to determine how much to amplify the photons coming in. It'd have to be a well stabilized setup due to all the delays involved, but I'd imaging the distance and clarity gains could be invaluable for something like fixed cameras or sniping.

Only Derek could be so excited to learn that a closed room with the lights off will be dark. lol
