American's don't need to get a visa ahead of time to enter Japan. US citizens automatically get a 3 month visa (tourist).

I had foreign english teachers when i was in elementary school back in korea. The reason for this was because my parents knew we were coming back to states and they wanted me and my brothers english to be functional by the time we go back to usa. Most english teachers were american and some were canadian. They all seemed to be in the country because they all had romantic interest in that said demographics. If you really think about it a persons favorite country has to meet all needs otherwise it wouldnt be a favorite country. My mother personally think foreign english teachers in asian countries are mainly gaining access to the country through that job so they can have fun.

I'm confused how the Italian is working there, because I've had many people tell me when applying to work that companies would specifically ask for proof that you were born in an English speaking country or you were not eligible for the job. One of the big reasons being that they don't want Japanese students hearing English being spoken in a foreign accent, as opposed to a natural native accent due to pronunciation. Not saying foreigners can't be good teachers but that is a valid reason for only wanting native speakers teaching a language.
