Maybe all Valve games are connected somehow. It sounds crazy but HL and Portal are definitely share the same Universe. If CS and L4D are connected in the same verse. We can just say it also all connected. Even Tf2. Heck, god knows maybe TF2 universe exist first then go to CS, then go to L4D2 and in future we got alien invasion so we got HL series along with Portal, After the HL timeline ends, Dota start to come along while another Dimension we have Deadlock.

Left 4 dead is a less advanced timeline where to survive, you must kill.

The "no mercy" mission is a connection to L4D. The Payday series is a "what-if?" Version of L4D lore. The PD gang stole the green flu, but Bain died as a sacrifice to it. So technically everybody in the PD universe owes very much to the gang.

heres my theory: the payday games take place in an alternate l4d universe where the green flu was taken care of BEFORE it spread too much, so instead of nearly all of America getting infected, it was just a few people.
