I remember watching this match, I followed Roddick religiously from 2005 until he retired and this was the first time I saw him beat Federer, I was so happy that day, '06 US Open Final still stings, '09 Wimby Final still stings, so glad Andy could finally beat Federer here.

There was a lot of pain released in this win for Andy. You could tell it meant a lot

I think that Andy's coach at the time, Larry Stefanki, deserves a lot of credit for this win. Good execution by Roddick, of course, but there was plenty of training going on behind the scenes between those two.

Federer was 21-3 against him. Just totally dominated the h2h even though some of Rogers wins were really close, like Wimbledon 2009, ATP finals 2006 where Federer saved match points, Wimbledon 2004, Basel 2001 (Federer won 7-5 in a final set breaker).
Roddick just suffered so much heartache against him, over and over again. But Miami was really kind to him. 2 titles there, and 2 of his 3 wins vs Roger were in Miami. Plus a win over prime Rafa in his 2010 title run. And after all the heartache, Roddick got the win in his last ever match against Roger.

The match where Roddick FINALLY figured out his tell when returning 2nd serves. Shame he couldn't have played like this during Fed's prime. Roddick always had it in him—everyone knows about '09, but the '04 Wimby final was a lot closer than anyone remembers. Roddick could definitely have won that one too.

there's actually a tennis tv interview where andy explains that someone told roddick that federer was reading andy's return position longer than he realized, so he finally started moving inside out a lot later

Funny story about their "rivalry" - apparently pretty early on, Federer picked up on a tell Roddick had and exploited it for 12 years before a mutual friend spilled the beans and told Roddick. This was the last match they played after Roddick learned about the tell and how Fed was exploiting it, and stopped doing it. Tells can create huge imbalances in sports or anything competitive. Agassi similarly had picked up on a Boris Becker tell that actually let Agassi know where Becker was serving to. Prior to that Becker always crushed Agassi, and after that Agassi crushed Becker.

This was the match where Andy figured Roger had seen Andy moved a little too early on second serves, and would change his serve based on Roddick's movement. Finally he fixed it and crushed some 2nd serve returns.

Well a guy with a single grand slam title in his whole career just decided to go, lacking of better choice, into "suicidal" mode against a player way far better than he never was and on a secondary tournament... that's common. Federer didn't mind that much...

I used to be a tennis fan since the Great Graff was playing on the court...and though Andy did not have too many Grand Slam trophy in his bucket, but I have become his fan initially after that I started following Roger...I could not forget the Wimbledon 2009 final...the five set match between Andy and Roger...though Andy was the runner up but he will always be remembered for his match...

The whole saga of Roger and Andy was about power vs placement,

I think finesse always wins in this sport but power can have its place, this was fierce 🔥

It shows how much mental game he had to use to just beat Federer. And he knew that if he made one mistake, Federer would've found a way and sneaked the win. It happened before in 2006.
