He was testing her fighting spirit right from the start. The part where she kicks him in the nuts, apparently Pai mei had mastered the art to automatically pull his nuts into his body, when needed - to protect them. So you couldn’t kick him down there and incapacitate him in a fight!

Through the years, I look at this and realized how slow she moved and how many unnecessary sword movement she did in this scene. Something happened between then and now!

When he had her arm it really felt like he was experiencing an internal dilemma of whether to break it or not depending on her answers. Very powerful moment in this scene.

It makes me wonder if any other of the Vipers besides Beatrix and Elle were trained by Pai Mei. I assume that Bill himself was, and of course Elle was the last. It would be interesting in Pai Mei and Bill had an effective partnership, where Bill brough all of his proteges to the old man for training. I'm trying to imagine either Sophie or Gogo (who was Oh-ren's protégé rather than Bill's) dealing with Pai Mei. Sophie didn't seem the type, and Gogo would have probably provoked the old man into killing her.
