Is universal basic income working? We went to Finland to find out | CNBC Reports

If i had free money from UBI i would use it to pay bills, buy food and use it to support myself while i try to get a higher education(masters degree) and or find another job.

It's 6 years after and they don't have it anymore.

Since money is used for EVERYTHING in society the requirement that people MUST work is a slavery system. If you search patents you find real technology that can free up peoples costs and even remove the costs for things such as power and various other things, including the ability to travel with no cost. But everything is made to cost money, so that is a slavery system, you're FORCED to work and if you don't, you die or end up in some prison like place.

Stating you have to have a job to survive is slavery, people don't like having to hear that, but its true.
If your basics are covered and you are FREE to get a job if you like, then that starts are the very least to free people from slavery.

That's rubbish.over 60% of the people involved in this experiment had suicidal ideas, 22 actually did it. You don't have control of actually ANYTHING. including your own kids as a family

It’s a bit embarrassing that mainstream media is less effective at relaying information then random people on the internet.

If your rent or property tax is higher than your UBI, then clearly UBI won't help.

They apparently have full housing benefits because in the US getting a housing choice voucher whether you are working a low-income job or unemployed or retired and awaiting Social Security, that UBI money is used commonly for rents, if you are lucky enough to get it.

so i had to earn 40 work credits for ssdi and now they are saying you need 0 work credits for a ubi?

Do you know what 560 American dollars would do for someone in the US? NOTHING.

Govt welfare dependency = a guaranteed vote for socialism. And socialism always fails when other people's money runs out.

In the US, we merely need a solution to our own natural rate of unemployment via existing legal and physical infrastructure.

Personally idk about the future but I think for now UBI should be operated as a supplement to make life a little bit easier and reduce poverty and expand the middle class, even $300/month would make a big difference for someone in poverty.

A trail can't tell you anything about how ubi works. Need the whole population to participate or don't bother.

Sadly, many have fallen due to a $200 shortfall each month. Imagine how helpful a $600/mo UBI would be !

The Finnish economy is in a REALLY bad shape now. A public debt of 70% of total GDP. The worst economy in the Nordics. Will they ever be able to pay that back? I feel like the politicians really let the country down.

If you have to pay rent/mortage in Bucharest, you cannot leave on 500 euros. How would that happen in Finland?! But it is a good start...

The Universal basic income actually does not have any "plan" for people to get out from poverty. It just let people stay where they are - on the bottom of society. The best solution for poor to get out from poorness is Negative tax income introduced by Milton Freedman.

UBI increases bargaining power for workers because a guaranteed, unconditional income gives them leverage to say no to exploitative wages and abusive working conditions. Employers can't push workers around as much. UBI would be the greatest catalyst for new jobs, entrepreneurship, and creativity we have ever seen.

There is not enough funding to have everyone take part in this experiment. We know this isn't the universal, shut up already.

Update: Finland pulled the plug on the program. If they couldn't make it work for just 2000 people, how is it supposed to work for an entire country...

There was something like that in ancient Rome, but then it turned out to be destructive for the Roman economy.

UBI will happen sooner or later. But also drugs marijuana, prostitution will be legal, lower forms of public education meaning they can't keep their money. Also everything will just cost more hence they will still be poor. Remember it is a BASIC income to just live by not to live well

There's a reason Finland is Finland and USA is USA.

Interesting experiment, but the biggest issue/problem is not whether it will discourage people from working (that's all they'll find out here). The biggest problem is how are you going to pay for a "universal" program like this? What effect will it have on the debt? What effect will it have on inflation? Stuff like that.

Wonder why they don't show what someone in the ghetto does with the money? Oh wait Finland doesn't have ghettos filled with foreign cultures.
