That oversized load had an escort vehicle in front of it, probably behind it as well. The person driving the escort vehicle in front should have seen the train coming and radioed for the truck to stop before it reached the crossing.

I’m not a trucker although I did drive military trucks during my 40 yrs of service with the German Air Force. I see a pilot car so I do assume, that the route for this heavy transport was planned and checked beforehand. So I would reason, that the transport shouldn’t be in danger to get stuck on this crossing. Are there any procedures in place that would say that if you got trapped between the gates (and are not stuck) just step on the throttle to clear the crossing and don’t mind the damage to the gates?

My condolences go out to the two crew members that lost their lives due to stupidity of that trucking company. Every rail crossing has a blue sign with a phone number in case something like this happens, even for a minute. A minute may have given the engineer time enough to slow down, or stop.

Totally preventable.

Aside from stupidly, poor planning on the part of the pilot team and equipment transporter - U.P. railroad’s timetable speed through such a small desert community is grossly negligible, and in my opinion, sourced out of corporate greed.

This is one of U.P’s high priority, transcontinental corridors (their Sunset Route) serving the Los Angeles port region and Chicago’s Global One inland port region as gateways all over the country. U.P. and Norfolk Southern railroad (east coast railroad ) have a guaranteed service partnership which makes this section of their route highly profitable, i.e., increased track speed along “guaranteed service” routes.

I would guess track speed during impact was between 50 and 60mph. Sadly few would associate the crime of allowing trains these sizes to travel at these speeds through small towns. The draft forces alone, as we saw are strong enough to rip an economy from under a small town if a derailment were to occur.

I’ve been in the seat where those men died operating through towns just as small. Matter of fact I worked for the same company they died on. These families have a long road to heal, hopefully U.P. doesn’t claim “Not Our Fault” in awarding them a settlement.

Bad part is they are going to nail the driver even though legally it falls to the spotters that a load that size in the state of texas is required to have.

There are reports out that the blue sign number was called 30 minutes before collision and dispatch forgot about the call. Audio recording timestamps will determine culpability. Lot of investigating needed to get to the bottom of this one. Only winners here will be the lawyers prosecuting this.

Do we know for sure that nobody called it in? I seem to recall many years ago a stuck truck being called in but the message never got relayed to the locomotive operator. Fortunately no lives were lost in that incident, but this time was different. I find it hard to believe nobody called it yet, but I supposed there is that scenario where everyone thinks someone else called it in.

The local pd couldn't investigate their own crossing signals meaningfully enough to realize there was a phone number strapped to them to keep this whole ordeal from happening in the first place. Forgive me if I am skeptical that they can conduct an investigation into what happened.
